Lead agency for HealthSmart or “EhCare@Eastern” Eastern Health is leading Victoria with the implementation of EhCare@eastern, -aim to improve patient care through introduction of information systems that support clinical service delivery
EhCare@Eastern Release one • Lists, alerts, allergies • Results, discharge summaries, • discharge and outpatient meds. Release two is underway • Electronic inpatient drugs charts, pathology and radiology ordering • Pharmacology decision support
EhCare@eastern (Healthsmart) has improved patient outcomes • Electronic ‘tagging’ of patients known to palliative care and other services allows sending of automated alerts to staff • “right person, right place, right time” - ‘pull’ known and unknown palliative patients from ED • Electronic referrals improve efficiency
… lots more Benefits to quality and safety through • electronic medication chart, • prevention of errors eg. Clot (DVT) prevention, allergies • audit
Issues … complexity of introducing different IT systems across a huge and complex organization …. Lack of integration between some EH IT systems …. Lack of integration between EH systems and stakeholder IT systems
Way forward? • Improved integration between IT applications already in use across the sector • Clear direction from DoH on which systems should be utilized by agencies in future
Way forward? Key to success is good collaboration between working clinicians and IT departments • Fit in with existing clinical workflows and develop new and better ones • Resourcing for clinicians to be involved with health IT service development
