  4. I. Latinos Migrate North… • During the Great Depression, many Mexican Americans were sent back to Mexico through a process known as repatriation • As illegal immigration increased, Eisenhower launched a program to deport illegal Latino immigrants

  5. I. Latinos Migrate North… • In the 1950s, Puerto Ricans moved to the U.S. to escape economic troubles 1. Encountered racial discrimination & high levels of poverty F. Cuban immigrants settled in Florida after fleeing the Cuban Revolution in 1959

  6. II. Latinos Organize • Latinos formed organizations to work for equal rights • Mexican Americans formed the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) 1. Encouraged assimilation into American society 2. Ended segregation in public places in Texas 3. Criticized the abuses of deportation authorities
