Animals were heavily relied on in world war one. The main animals used in the war were: • Dogs • Horses • Pigeons • Animals were used for transport, bomb detection, communication and keeping up morale.
HORSES. Early in the war cavalry was really common but as trench warfare started it became almost obsolete. Horses were used as a form of transport during the war. In Spring 1918, out of 150 horses used in the charge only four survived.
DOGS. A trained dog was faster than a human runner, could travel over any terrain and was a smaller target to a sniper. Dogs were used as messengers and proved to be as reliable as soldiers in the dangerous job of running messages.
PIGEONS. The only way to bring a pigeon down was to bring bird of prey to the front line. A falcon could bring down a pigeon when a marksman could not. The speed a pigeon flew at was really fast, it was almost impossible to shoot one down. They also had extraordinary homing instinct.
