Affective Outcomes Assessment: Valuing the Exit Survey from a One-shot Library Instruction Session on Googling Better and Web Evaluation One-shot library instruction sets a time limit for accomplishing complex learning goals. Measuring success of the instruction can be more complex than the instruction itself. To collect data on the affective outcomes of a one-shot library instruction class on “Googling” and web evaluation, a survey was made on student perceptions of their search skills and the value they put on evaluating search results on the web. Pre-assessment and an exit evaluation form containing ratings charts and open-ended questions were compiled into an exit survey. The survey was filled out immediately after instruction while feelings were close to the surface. The assessment was fruitful in pointing out where learners perceived an improvement in their learning and whether they were able to absorb the principle of web evaluation into their knowledge base. Special value was placed on the dissatisfaction revealed in the survey by almost half of the respondents, who expected more coverage of Googling with advanced features, summed up by one scribbled-in comment: “more smart searches.” Workshop: Harnessing the Beast-Googling Better Googling skills Web Evaluation Wanda L.
