Prosper Fingal • Supporting adults with intellectual disability in North County Dublin • Community based non-statutory & not-for-profit organisation, funded by the Health Service Executive (HSE) • Comprehensive range of services & supports to meet a variety of need • Core purpose: “To support each individual to live the life they choose, in the same way and same places as everybody else”
Culture Shift! “Culture consists of the shared beliefs, values, norms and ideas that create a common identity among a group of people” (Giddens, 2006, p. 534) 1990’s Protection, control & charity 2010 Listening, acknowledging&enabling
Citizenship “… citizenship is the word we use to describe what it is to be recognised by other people as an individual who is a full member of the community” (Duffy, 2003, p.2)
Starting Point Community Roles (volunteer, consumer, voter, member, employee etc.) Participation & Contribution Friends Family
Friendship Programme • Developing core skills for friendship: - Recognition & Support - Planning & Negotiating - Communication - Transport - Money Management - Personal Care & Safety - Technology - Exploring Community • Value = independence, responsibility, social networks, reciprocity
Speaking Up • Developing core skills for advocacy: - Vehicle to learn about rights - Understanding the election process - Committee Membership - Planning & Negotiation - Speaking Up - Problem solving - Campaigning - Empowerment • Value = confidence, pride, peer & self advocacy, initiating positive change for all
