  5. Verbs • Action words • What is the subject doing? • Ex. Tim is sleeping

  6. Adjectives • Define or modify the meaning of noun or pronoun • Tell what kind • Tell which one • Tell how many • Ex. The blue-eyed girl • A dozen KrispyKreme doughnuts

  7. Adverbs • Define or modify VERBS or ADJECTIVES • Tell how • Tell where • Tell when • And to what extent • **usually end in –ly • EX. Walked slowly • Ex. Walked there

  8. Prepositions • Shows position or direction • Relates noun/pronoun to other words in a sentence • Ex: On, Under, Over

  9. Conjunctions • “connector words” • Join one part of a sentence to another • Types • 1. coordinating- yet, so • 2. correlative- either, or • 3. subordinating- although, because

  10. Interjections • Express powerful emotions • Usually followed by an exclamation mark • Help to add voice to writing • Ex. Ouch! Hurry!
