Foundational Concepts in Computer Science Addresses conceptual models of key aspects of computer science to support teaching current K12 computer science (particularly AP-CSP) and allowing teachers to adapt to changes in the discipline. General topics are how computers work (data representation, instruction cycle, operating system, networking, etc.), social impact (privacy, security, equity, etc.), and important application areas (AI, big data, etc.).

Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • As a CS teacher, you should probably be familiar with everything in this textbook. • In this course we will focus on six chapters • Chapter 1 – Computer Data Storage • Chapter 2 – Computer Organization/Architecture • Chapter 3 – Operating Systems • Chapter 9 – Databases • Chapter 4 – Networking • Chapter 11 – Artificial Intelligence

Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • You should reach each chapter carefully using the study guide for guidance. • Pay attention to: • Vocabulary • How the pieces work together • How what you are reading fits your mental model • How/when you might address this with students

Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Suggested Schedule • Individual Reading/Videos/Activities – Monday – Friday, week 1 • Might want to schedule a "touch base" meeting in the middle of the week • First Group Meeting – Friday/Saturday, week 1 • Individuals work Study Guide – Saturday/Sunday, week 1 • Groups Develop Questions – Monday, week 2 • Check our "response" materials – Tuesday-Thursday, week 2 • Prepare for "competency demo" – Tuseday-Thursday, week 2 • Meetup and "competency demo" - Friday or Monday
Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Evaluation • Competency Demos (2/3 of your grade) • Final Deliverable Responses (1/3 of your grade)
Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Competency Demos • Consist of 3-6 questions based on study guide • Approximately 20-30 minutes to complete • Given at the meetups • You will be responsible to make arrangements if you miss a meetup
Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Competency Demos • Initial "grade" will be • Pass – No further action required • No Pass – Faculty are not convinced you have exhibited competency with the material • Further Info Needed – Faculty have some questions • You are responsible to set up an online meetup with the faculty to discuss our questions. • Will switch to Pass/No Pass
Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Competency Demos • If you get a "No Pass" than you should restudy the material and may retake the CompDemo • May take multiple times if necessary • Must wait at least 48 hours between attempts so you have time to study • In most cases must be passed by the next scheduled meetup.
Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Competency Demos • Chapters 1 and 4 are worth two points each • Chapters 2, 3, 9, and 11 are worth one point each
Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Final Deliverable • Distributed at the fourth meetup • Will consist of several essay questions. • Eg. "What do you think your students should know about networking and privacy?" • Will mostly be open-ended questions that give you an opportunity to reflect on the topics of the course and apply the knowledge to various situations. • You will be given two weeks to reflect on these essays and even ask questions of us at the final meetup.
Foundational Concepts of Computer Science • Final Deliverable • Your final responses will be submitted online at the completion of the course. • You will receive a letter grade for each of the essays which will be averaged in to an overall deliverable grade. • You will NOT have an opportunity to revise and resubmit this project.
The Bottom Line • There is likely a wide variety of backgrounds of the teachers in the room • We want to give you multiple opportunities to interact with and explore the material. • But we don't want to make you jump through "busy work" hoops to earn a grade • You take responsibility of learning the material but use us to help you get there.
