  1. Close Management By: Josh Thompson

  2. What is close management • Close management is the confinement of an inmate apart from the general population, for reasons of security, or the order and effective management of the institution, where the inmate, through his or her behavior, has demonstrated an inability to live in the general population • It is often used to oppress when felt necessary • 70% of inmates in close management are African American or Middle Eastern • Of that 70%, only about 65% have records worthy of close management • Technology used to enclose or quiet those who are causing “problems”

  3. Relation to text • Often times black women were forced on Chain Gangs while white women got special treatment and worked on farms • Jim Crow laws that would target and oppress minorities • Prisons can put someone in close management and not have to fully explain why they choose to do this

  4. Modern day jim crow laws • The Florida legal term is akin to solitary confinement, employed as retaliation against prisoners participating in the latest prison strike against a system of mass incarceration that effectively perpetuates the racial caste system of twentieth century Jim Crow law. • Anyone speaking of uprising and forming a protest were put in close management

  5. questions • Learning more about close management, do you think it is a vehicle for oppression and should be more talked about in the public eye? • Are prisons still just as bad today as they were 100 years ago when it comes to oppressing minorities?
