Colonial Unrest • Colonists angered by forced resettlement and increased taxes find ways to NOT pay taxes • Large taxes are placed on imported and exported items in the colonies • To avoid this tax colonists begin illegally Smuggling goods in and out of the colonies • Smuggling- Hiding goods from British tax collectors • Even when caught colonist were tried by a jury of their peers and often found innocent
George Grenville • Becomes Britain’s Prime Minister in 1763 • Grenville has two main concerns • Paying Britain’s Debt • Stopping Colonial Smuggling • To cut down on smuggling he: • Made all smuggling cases be tried in military courts • Authorized Writs of Assistance- documents that allowed customs officer to search any location for smuggled goods • Grenville would also impose many new taxes on the colonies
The Sugar Act (1764) • The Sugar Act of 1764- what did it do? • Raises Tax on Sugar • Lowered the tax on molasses • Gave customs officers the right to seize goods without a trial • In smuggling cases the burden of proof was on the defendant (Guilty until proven innocent) • Colonists feel their rights as English citizens are not being enforced
The Stamp Act (1765) • The Stamp Act of 1765- What did it do? • Taxed all printed materials • Includes: Newspapers, Books, Pamphlets, Wills, Playing Cards • Any printed material must have a stamp applied by British Officials • Angers colonists for two main reasons: • Tax only imposed on colonists • Colonists are being taxed without representation
Townshend Acts (1767) • The Townshend Acts of 1767- What did it do? • Taxed imported goods • Taxed many basic items that colonists depended on: • Glass, Tea, Paper, Cloth and Lead
