  3. Learners Today…Leaders Tomorrow! Check out the numbers below… How are you performing?

  4. Section I: Academics • All students must pass core academic subjects for promotion. Students who do not pass core subjects may be assigned summer school. • All students must take physical education. • Grading Reports will be issued on the following dates:

  5. Section I: Academics • Working Lunch: • Students are assigned working lunch for not completing homework. Students use this time to complete the incomplete assignment and therefore not receive an F. • Students who are assigned working lunch will not be allowed to participate in the next Marvelous Monday. (Dates are in handbook on pg. 8) • Students are allowed to eat regular school lunch.

Section I: Academics • Working Lunch • Students will only be scheduled two times for the same assignment, and if not completed during these two times students will receive an F and be assigned an after-school detention. • Students who do not report to working lunch as assigned will be assigned ISS.

  7. Section I: Academics • Cheating: • Both the lender and borrower will receive zeros on the work and parents will be notified. • Plagiarism is cheating. • DO WHAT IS RIGHT!!!!

Section I: Academics • Textbooks: • Students will be required to pay replacement cost for lost books and for damages to their books. • Students who owe money for lost or damaged textbooks will not be allowed to participate in extra curricular activities or attend Student Appreciation Day. • Fines will carry over from year to year and school to school.

  9. Section II: Athletics • 7th and 8th graders may participate.

Section II: Athletics • Other Guidelines: • Must meet discipline and academic requirements. • Must meet all criteria set by GCS & SCHSL. • May not participate if he/she becomes 15 before July 1. • Must have current physical on file. • Must pay athletic fees • Must have transportation to and from practice and games. • Student must be in attendance for one-half of school day to play in game or practice unless they have a doctor’s note.

  11. Section III: Dress Code • Students must be in dress code when they arrive on campus and remain until they exit campus.

  12. Section III: Dress Code • Shirts: • Solid Navy Blue, Black, Khaki, or White. • Top shirt must have a collar and sleeves. • Shirts under the dress code shirt must be solid white, black, khaki or navy.

Section III: Dress Code • Pants, Skirts, Dresses or Shorts: • Solid navy, khaki or black. • No denim of any color. • Must be worn at waist. • Belts must be worn if pants have belt loops. • Tights or leggings cannot be worn without a dress code length garment over them. • No velour pants or athletic pants.

Section III: Dress Code • Outerwear • Coats may NOT be worn in classrooms. • No “hoodies” may be worn in classrooms. • Light weight jackets that are solid navy, black, khaki or white are permitted in classrooms. • Dress code shirts must be worn under sweaters, vests, jackets, fleece and Beck Academy sweatshirts .

Section III: Dress Code • Shoes, Hats, Piercing and Accessories: • No bedroom shoes may be worn on campus. • Flip flops are approved if the prongs do not go through to the bottom of the shoe. • No head “gear” or sunglasses. • No facial, nose, and/or tongue jewelry. • No non-human hair color. • No scarves, suspenders, or studded jewelry.

Section III: Dress Code • Consequences: • All teachers will check dress code throughout the entire school day. • Students who are “out of dress code” during first period will be sent to change and a lunch detention will be assigned. • After 1st period, students who are “out of dress code” will be sent to change or call a parent for clothes. • Student could receive a referral and be sent to ISS for violations to dress code.

  17. Section III: Dress Code • Dress Code for Athletes: • Beck Academy’s players should wear dress code unless otherwise specified by their coach. • JL Mann’s players should wear their team shirt only on home game days only. • Refer to pg 5 for detailed requirements for athletes.

  18. Section III: Non-Negotiables • Beck Academey students must: • Wear ID on lanyard around neck at all times. • Wear Beck Academy dress code. • Carry planner and SWOOSH notebook to all classes. • Be respectful, responsible, and value the rights of others.

Section IV: Student Behavior • Students are expected to behave in a responsible and courteous manner as part of an overall positive learning experience. • It is expected that teachers will enforce school rules and parents will support efforts to provide a safe learning environment. • Students with numerous referrals will be placed on disciplinary probation and recommended for alternative school.

Section IV: Student Behavior • Tardy and Restroom Passes: • Students are allowed 5 tardies and 5 restroom passes per nine weeks. • After 5 tardy passes are used an after-school detention will be assigned for each additional tardy. • After 5 restroom passes are used and after-school detention will be assigned for each additional pass out of class. **Students who have medical issues and require additional restroom breaks will be permitted with a note from their doctor on file with the school nurse.

  21. Section IV: Student Behavior • ID Badges: • ID’s are provided to students for free at the beginning of each school year. Additional ID’s may be purchased in media center for $5.00. • ID’s must be worn at all times, should not be defaced and picture visible. • Students without ID’s in homeroom will be assigned lunch detention and will wear a temporary ID for the day. • After-school detention will be assigned when students do not wear ID throughout school day or remove temporary ID.

Section IV: Student Behavior • School Planner: • Students are given a planner at the beginning of each school year. • Additional planners can be purchased for a cost of $8.00. • Students without a planner in 1st period will be assigned a lunch detention and should ask for a planner sheet for the day. • Students without a planner in all other classes will be assigned an after-school detention.

Section IV: Student Behavior • Lockers: • Lockers are a convenience and a privilege to students. • Only use your locker and charges will be assessed if damaged. • All lockers may be inspected by school officials without student permission. • Do not keep valuables, food, or other non-school related items in lockers.

  24. Section IV: Student Behavior • Book Bags: • Stored in lockers before first period. • Rolling book bags are not permitted unless a doctor’s note is on file. • Book bags are permitted in sixth period. • “Book Sacks” are permitted in classrooms throughout the school day.

  25. Section IV: Student Behavior • School Rules: • School rules regarding classroom behavior will be posted in each classroom and in the syllabus posted on each teacher’s website. Parents or students may also request a printed copy of the syllabus if desired.

Section IV: Student Behavior • Discipline Procedures: • At Beck Academy we believe that classroom discipline is one of the keys to high student achievement, a safe school, and an environment conducive to learning. • Teachers will use various classroom discipline methods to attempt to prevent behavior issues from arising.

  27. Section IV: Student Behavior • The 5-Step Plan is intended to help students and parents curtail discipline problems before they are referred to the office.

  28. Section IV: Student Behavior • If at any time a teacher feels that class cannot continue with a particular student in the classroom, the teacher will have that student removed. If a student is removed from class, they will receive a referral and be assigned at least one day of ISS or OSS.

  29. Section IV: Student Behavior • It is the responsibility of any student in Greenville County to be aware of the code of conduct for the district. In addition to the information viewed on the GCS Discipline Video, a complete listing of the behavior code can be found on the GCSD webpage under the School Board link: District’s Discipline Code: www.greenville.k12.sc.us

Section IV: Student Behavior • Bullying, discrimination, harassment and intimidation is against school policy and will not be tolerated. • Students should report any and all concerns of bullying, intimidation, harassment or discrimination to the their teacher and/or grade level administrator.

  31. Section IV: Student Behavior • All reports will be investigated confidentially. • If the investigation determines that inappropriate conduct has occurred, the administration will take reasonable, timely, age-appropriate, and effective corrective action.

  32. Section IV: Student Behavior • No I-Pods, MP3, PSP, or other electronic devices are permitted at school. These items will be confiscated and parents will have one week to pick up items from administration.

  33. Section IV: Student Behavior • Cell phones must be turned off and out of sight during school hours. If a cell phone is confiscated it will be returned to a parent according to the terms set below.

Section IV: Student Behavior • After-School Detention • Held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 • Transportation is not provided • If student is picked up late then they will not be assigned future detentions, but will be assigned ISS instead • If detention is not served then ISS will be assigned

Section IV: Student Behavior • Marvelous Mondays • Students who do not get a referral and have not been scheduled for working lunch between the Marvelous Monday dates will be allowed to wear Greenville County Dress Code on the scheduled Monday. ***exceptions are no hoodies and no clothes with holes in them. September 24th is the 1st Marvelous Monday!!! • Other dates are listed on page 8 in student handbook.

  36. Section IV: Student Behavior • Student Appreciation Day!!! • A day is planned for May by the PTSA that rewards students for good behavior and provides a day of fun for those that qualify. Refer to page 8 for details.  Fun, Fun, Fun 

Section V: Attendance • Attendance at school is a STATE LAW. • You can be retained if you miss more than 10 school days per year. • If absent from school, students should make up missed work within 5 days of returning to school and bring in a note from a parent stating the dates and reason for absence. • Students must be at school for 3.5 hrs to avoid being counted absent.

  38. Section V: Attendance • Tests: • If students are present on the day a test is announced and absent on the day of the test, they must be prepared to take the test on the day of their return.

Section V: Attendance • Early Dismissals • Request for early dismissals must be written and made only by a parent and turned into the attendance office. • Students dismissed only between class periods or during lunch unless there is an emergency situation. • No early dismissals after 2:15 pm will be granted unless there is an emergency.

  41. Section V: Attendance • If you miss school without parental consent you are considered truant. Truancy is a violation of state law and it could be referred to family court.

Section V: Attendance • In-School Suspension • Students assigned to ISS should report to the directly to the cafeteria before 8:30 am. • Students may bring a bag lunch from home, or they will be charged for a school bag lunch from cafeteria. • Students will complete all assignments sent from their classroom teachers. • Students that receive a referral while in ISS will be suspended.

  43. Section VI: Procedures • SWOOSH NOTEBOOK: Every student is required to have a three inch, three-ring binder. This notebook will be used and graded in all classes. Contents must include the school planner, a pencil pouch, seven dividers with tabs, and wide-ruled notebook paper.

Section VI: Procedures • Morning Bus Holding: • Students should not arrive earlier than 7:30am • 6th grade reports to cafeteria, 7th & 8th graders should eat in cafeteria if needed and then report to the gym. • Opening Activities: • The Pledge of Allegiance and a Minute of Silence will take place each morning.

Section VI: Procedures • Passes: • Students should have a pass in the planner with them anytime they are in halls during class time. • Telephone Calls: • Messages for students can not be taken; arrangements should be made before student leaves for school. • Changes in Transportation: • Must be in writing from parent and given to the attendance office first thing in the morning. Students cannot change their bus route to ride with another student.

Section IV: Procedures • No flowers, balloons, or gifts are delivered to students at school. • School insurance is available and may be purchased at anytime throughout the year. • Students should be on their best behavior during all assembly programs. • All visitors must report to the main office before visiting any part of the campus and a 24 advance notice is required for observing classes.

  47. Section IV: Procedures • All fire and tornado drills must be practiced in an orderly fashion to promote safety in case of a real emergency. Procedures are posted in every classroom near the door. • All articles except textbooks and library books should be turned into the main office. • Beck Academy is not responsible for any lost articles.

Section IV: Procedures • Cafeteria: • All food and drink must be consumed in the cafeteria and not taken out of the cafeteria. • Student lunch prices for full paid are $2.00 and reduced are $.40. • Student breakfast prices for full paid are $1.00 and reduced are $.30. • No meals may be charged; student will receive an alternative meal. • Lunch accounts may be paid online.

Section IV: Procedures • Health Room & Medication: • Students may visit the health room in the case of an emergency or with a pass from a staff member. • The nurse will issue dismissals, students are not allowed to call or text parents without permission. Should a student not following these procedures, the student’s cell phone will be confiscated. • Medication cannot remain with students and will not be given without parental consent. See handbook for details.

  50. Section IV: Procedures • Emergency Contact Forms are sent home with students in the first day packet. It is very important, in the case of a medical emergency, that these forms are kept current with the school nurse. Return these forms promptly!!! *** If numbers change throughout the year, these forms MUST be updated!!!***
