  1. The Butter Battle Book By: Dr. Seuss Justin Tienhaara

  2. The Butter Battle Book • The Yooks vs. The Zooks • Buttered toast upright vs. Buttered upside down • Grandfather Yook explains to his son how he fought The Zooks (VanItch) • Arms race • “boys in the back” would make him a new weapon when he was defeated • Back to present day: Grandfather Yook and Vanitch are going to drop a Big-Boy Boomeroo • Rest of town hiding under grounds

  3. Tucker Man’s Theory • Forming- Storming-Norming-Performing-Adjourning • Forming • At some point there was a meeting about the enjoyment of toast • Storming • Disagreement on which way the toast should be buttered once feelings and expressions began to be discussed • …Norming • Two separate towns (Yooks & Zooks) • Towns put other differences aside for the common ideal of how toast should be prepared • Two separate sub groups

  4. Working Group vs. Team • Strong leader vs. Shared leadership roles • Discuss, decides, and delegates • Leader has the “boys in the back” make • the weapons. He assigns grandpa Yook jobs. • vs. Discuss, decide and work together • Individual Work-Products vs. Collective • Work products. • Story is about Grandpa vs. VanItch rather than Yooks vs. Zooks.

  5. Roles of Group Members • Energizer-Prods the group into action • The Leader • Initiator/ Contributor- Contributes ideas suggestions; new old or old in a novel fashion • The Leader • Feeling Expresser- Shares own feelings with others • Grandpa Yook • Follower- Goes along with the movement of group • The Yooks and the Zooks • Blocker- Interferes with progress. • VanItch for the Yooks • GranddpaYooks for the Zooks

  6. Group Norms • MuzaferSherif created a study where men hand to make a judgment call if dot of light had moved • He found that the men believed the groups norm rather than their own judgment • This is dangerous because the Yooks and Zooks do not make judgment calls on individual levels. • Rather they believe what their group has agreed • (Nature of Group Dynamics Handout)

  7. Groups are a living system • Groups change over time like a living thing • However, some groups are stable and do not change • Stick to their basic processes and structures • days, weeks, or even years (rare) • Yooks and Zooks have been fighting for a long time • Belief structure has remain the same a long time • I believe the Big-Boy Boomeroo will not be dropped and eventually the two groups will change their basic processes and structures. • Tuckerman’s Theory= Change
