  3. Background • We don’t know for sure who wrote the Gospel of Mark. • It could have been John Mark, a companion of Peter and Paul. • The Gospel was written around 65 A.D. and was either written in Rome or Syria. • Another theory hold that he wrote for Christians about their suffering in the First Jewish Revolt against Rome.

  4. How it is Unique • It opens by claiming that Jesus is an authoritative teacher. • Jesus reveals the secrets of the Kingdom of God. • The Gospel tells about all of Jesus’ miracles • Makes it clear about Jesus’ authority in teaching. • Jesus: had the right to command, had official power, and is a reliable source.

  5. Why do you think the lion is the Symbol for Mark’s Gospel? OR Why is it important to the Gospel of Mark? Mark’s symbol

  6. This is Mark’s symbol because when John the Baptist’s voice “cried out in the wilderness” (Mark 1:3) because he heard the word of God, Mark wrote that his voice sounded like a roaring lion. The creature in Ezekiel 1:10 represents the four Evangelists: Mark, Matthew, Luke and John.

  7. Sample Passage “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” Mark 11:22-25 What do you think this passage means?

  8. Jesus’ Death • He died on the cross • It was his destiny to open the gates of heaven to humanity. • He was put to death by Pontius Pilate

  9. Important RQ’s • Where, when, and why was the Gospel of Mark written? • The Gospel was likely written sometime between AD 65 and 70. Since the audience for this gospel were Gentile Christians, who were suffering persecution for their belief in Jesus, it could be that the Gospel was written in Rome sometime shortly after Nero’s persecution of the Christians in AD 64-65. • What does Disciple mean? • Disciples are followers of Jesus. The word itself, means “learner.” • What is the messianic secret? • It refers to certain passages in the gospel where Jesus tells his disciples not to reveal his true identity. • Why did some Jewish leaders want Jesus crucified? • Many of them disagreed with Jesus’ teachings and practices. For example, they didn’t like it when he cured the fig tree, and drove the moneychangers from the temple.

  10. Follow Jesus like James and John by Going to church Talking or prying to God Helping others in a Christ like way Volunteering time for others like helping with a food drive Act in a Christ like way Assist the elderly Jesus’ death and resurrection Reflect on his death and resurrection and how it effects you Image what it would be like to be in Jesus’ place. Will you follow God? Putting the Gospel in Action
