Mentor / Service Learning Club By Mrs. Shaw Science Teacher and Helper Extraordinaire!!
Introductions • About Mrs. Shaw • I LOVE helping people (students especially!!) • My first experience with service was at Hibiscus Children’s Village where I volunteered in the group homes. • This is a life long goal of mine to build a program that encourages children to help others. • Service Learning was introduced to me at IRSC when I was getting my teaching degree and I quickly recognized this is a program I want to start when I teach.
I am NEW to this! • I am still figuring this Club out so please bear with me and have patience!! • I want to make this a rewarding endeavor that focuses on helping others BUT that will also reinforce academic issues so you all get real world application of what you are learning in class.
Mentoring: What is it and what do I do? • HELP ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!! • New students at SGMS are our primary target audience but if you have a “helping” state of mind then you may notice students who have been here for years who need guidance, friendship, or support!
Choose our Name CONTEST!! • http://www.myteacherpages.com/webpages/kShaw/mentor.cfm • Your first assignment is to help me name our club. Find the Blog on this site that says: "Let's name our Club . . . . StingRay___________ or ____________ StingRays". We will vote on the name in our second meeting Thursday September 22nd!! The winner of the name contest gets a Slushie Pass!!
Service Learning:What am I going to have to do? • AGAIN . . . .the theme here is HELP ANYONE!! • We will vote for a cause per 9 weeks that we can focus on to make a difference!! • It WILL include academic infusion! You WILL learn something . . . Hence the term Service LEARNING!! • http://www.servicelearning.org/
