How To How to Perform the Zikr Prayer Give thanks The word "zikr" means remembrance, specifically remembrance and thanks to Allah in the Muslim religion. In most forms of Islam, the Zikr (sometimes spelled Dhikr) is performed as a part of each salah, or obligatory prayer. There are five salahs each day and others for special occasions. For the Sufi, the Zikr is much more important, as it is central to their practice.
