Judge A Book By It’s Cover! While it should never be the only measure of a book, it’s a good place to start. Fact: Authors have almost no say in what the covers of their books look like.
…And it was just right! • Picking a book at the right reading level for you is important. • The book shouldn’t be too hard or too easy. Can you find and understand: AR level? Lexile Level? STAR Score? Or the FFM (five-finger method)
Blurb It! Read the back of the book or inside cover. Look for what it’s about. Read the review quotes. Are they from authors you like?
Test Drive It! • Read a page or two. • Do you like the writing style? • Does the intro hook you? • Some electronic formats allow you to read a sample chapter before you buy.
Go For Two Out of Three! • Is there a series you like? Have you read them all?
