The Mesospheric Ozone System for Atmospheric Investigations in the Classroom (MOSAIC)

MOSAIC project examines ozone in the mesosphere, collaboration between schools, Ozone Spectrometer deployment, research on ozone variations and atmospheric effects. Future plans include temperature and wind measurements. Published work on seasonal ozone variations. Atmospheric processes and interhemispheric circulation explained. Ozone reactions and water vapor's role discussed.

  10. Projects/science Now: • Chemistry of the creation and destruction of Ozone in the mesosphere • Effects of space weather on mesospheric ozone • Relating the seasonal variation of mesospheric ozone to the interhemispheric circulation Future: • Measuring the temperature of the mesopause – from the linewidth • Measuring winds in the mesopause – from shifts in center frequency Publications so far: “Seasonal and Diurnal Variations of Ozone near the Mesopause from Observations of the 11.072 GHz Line”, Rogers, A.E.E.,M. Lekberg and P. Pratap, Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, vol. 26, issue 10, p. 2192, 2009.

  11. air cools as it rises and expands “Summer” pole SUN’s rays “Winter” pole air is compressed and warms as it descends Interhemispheric circulation from summer to winter pole

  12. Interhemispheric circulation of water vapor from summer pole to winter pole as a possible explanation of semiannual variation of Ozone FALL SPRING EQUINOX EQUINOX MESOPAUSE H2O WINTER SUMMER WINTER Ozone reactions: O+O2+M → O3+M O3 + H → OH + O2 O3 + hv → O + O2 H2O + hv → H + OH ? Water vapor is photolyzed to atomic hydrogen which converts ozone to oxygen + OH in the mesosphere
