MCA Practice 8th Grade
1. Ask Question • Ask a question to find out more information or to solve a problem. • What does this fossil show? • What kind of medicine will cure a disease?
2. Do Background Research • Find as much information on the problem or question as possible. • You may be able to answer your question with simple research and avoid an lengthy experiment!
3. Construct Hypothesis • An explanation based on limited information. Must be further researched to determine its accuracy or truthfulness.
4. Test with Experiment • Construct a measurable experiment • Collect Data: • Information such as numbers, images, or words, gathered in an experiment.
5. Analyze Results/Draw Conclusions • Conclusion - The result of an experiment, action, or process.
6a. Hypothesis True? • Report Results • Show Data, graphs etc. • Write explanation • Report - A well-written scientific paper containing a hypothesis, explanation of experiment, all gathered data, and a conclusion of results.
6b. Hypothesis False? • Still report results! • Go back through the method and try again! • Report - A well-written scientific paper containing a hypothesis, explanation of experiment, all gathered data, and a conclusion of results.
Calculate • Do a mathematical equation
Rate, Speed, Velocity • Speed=distance/time • How fast something is moving
Observation • The act of noting or observing something. Observations are always recorded.
Hypothesis • An explanation based on limited information. Must be further researched to determine its accuracy or truthfulness.
Variables Variable - An aspect of an experiment that changes. Independent variable: The variable controlled. Dependent variable: The variable that is measured.
Data • Information such as numbers, images, or words, gathered in an experiment.
Scientific Theory • An explanation of natural phenomena. Scientific theories are supported by facts, observations, and repeatable experimentation. • These theories may change as technology advances and better observations are made. • Examples: Cell Theory, Theory of Plate Tectonics, Gravitational Theory
Density • Density=mass/volume
Mass • The amount of matter in an object
Volume • The space taken up by an object, liquid, or gas
Time • How long an event is • Seconds, minutes, or hours
Correlate, Correlation • What is the correlation between gravity and mass? • Or, What is the relationship between gravity and mass? • How do two things effect one another
Heterotroph, Consumer • Heterotroph – cannot make its own food • Consumes other organisms for energy
Autotroph, Producer • Can produce its own food • Consumes food that it has produced itself
Decomposer • Breaks down dead or dying organisms
