Purpose • To get to know yourself better??? • More clear view of your life • Time budget instrument • 24 hour baseline • Same for everyone
Comparisons • Comparing experiences to others • Comparing experiences to your self • These are typically more meaningful • We can relate to them • No worry about random sample or sample size
Diary has Two Dimensions • Objective • The activity (what you are doing) • Where the activity takes place • With whom • With how many • When • Subjective • Choice • Reason • Feelings
Step 1Procedure • Record date and day • Cover 24 hours • Start from the time you woke up • Record activities that took place after midnight on the next day
Step 1Activity? • For each one hour interval record your PRIMARY activity • The most important thing you did • If it lasted more than one hour draw a line • Group activities together as necessary • Getting up versus getting dressed
Step 1Where? • Where did the activity take place? • Code • 0—in your home: apartment, house… • 1—commuting: between home & school/work • 2—at place of employment • 3—school:formal or informal education facility • 4—other • If “other” keeps coming up create new categories as necessary
Step 1With How Many? • 0—alone • 1—one other person • 2 • 3 • 4 • 5—five or more people
Step 2 SubjectiveChoice, Reason, & Feeling • All related to quality of life • Choice and reason affect quality of life • Feeling is an indicator of the quality • Feeling good = high quality! • We are not accustomed to estimating intensity of these • Must think about it • DO NOT MAKE VALUE JUDGMENTS! • Does not matter how somebody else would perceive your answer (they will never see it)
Step 2 SubjectivePerceived Freedom (Choice) • Who made me do it? • Was I the origin of my activities or did I do it because I had to? • Did I have some choice? • Any choice? • No choice? • 100=totally your choice • Zero=you had no choice
Step 2Intrinsic Motivation • Why did I do this? • For the sake of the activity itself? • For some payoff? • Avoid negative consequences • 100= purely Intrinsic • Engaged in the activity for itself • Zero=NOT Intrinsic • For pay off or to avoid consequences
Step 2Feeling • Did I feel • good, positive, happy while engaged in the activity? • neutral, so-so; no feeling? • bad, negative, unhappy? • 100=the most positive • Zero=most negative • 50=mid point
Log Summary (the math part) • Calculate the mean (Average) for Choice, Reason, and Feeling • Summary data for Where • Count the number of hours you spent in each category • Home, at work, school… • Must add to 24 hours • Summary Data for With How Many • Count the number of hours you spent alone or with 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5= people • Creates a Frequency Distribution
Difficult Activities“you make the call” • Commuting and talking on the phone • Work or leisure? • Watching a movie for class • Choice? Feeling? • Relaxing in a Beverage Administering Restaurant • Alone or with more than five?
Sleep • Do you have a choice? • How did you sleep? • Bad dreams, back pain, worried about next day • Going to sleep, sleeping, and getting up • Think of three components, • May help to make it easier to evaluate • Was sleep enjoyable or just necessary for the next days tasks (choice?)
SEX • Sensitive topic • Invasion of privacy? NO • Your log is PRIVATE • Nobody will ever see the log • Only report numbers and categories • Was it your choice…completely? • Was it really enjoyable or done for the sake of your partner? • Did you have a head-ache? • If it makes you really uncomfortable to report than skip it
Decisions & Choices • You decided to go to school • Therefore the choice to commute to class is 100% yours • Short and long term decisions are not the same • Making the long-term decision does not mean that every decision related to is will be of your choosing • You can choose to not come to class • If you do not make this distinction you woll have a mean score of 100 for choice • Movie and car breakdown example…
Family Time • Obligation or choice? • Kissing Uncle Cigar Breath… • Taking your little brother to the movies…
