Miranda IM is on GCC computers Instant Messages pop up on my desktop Why use Instant Messenger? Instant Messaging • Locate and open Miranda IM on any GCC computer, and your Jabber account is automatically created. • Your Jabber ID (JID) is username@wocky.gc.maricopa.edu (username is your Palette username). Jabber is our GCC Instant Messaging client and requires a Palette username/password for access. • If you wish, create an account on: • AOL Instant Messenger website: http://www.aim.com/ • Yahoo Messenger website: http://messenger.yahoo.com/ • MSN Messenger website: http://get.live.com/messenger/overview Miranda IM is docked on the right of my desktop and displays my Buddy list. Tell your students your username on Jabber and any other clients to which you subscribe. Students will add you to their “Buddy” list and contact you when they have questions. When a student sends me an Instant Message, the white screen pops up on my desktop showing the student’s message. I write back by typing in the box at the bottom of the screen. Encourages contact between students and faculty • Students seldom need instruction to use Instant Messenger. They already use it to talk to their peers. By using the tool our students already know, we can enter their world. • Instant Messenger creates connections between students and teacher that break down artificial barriers, humanizing and personalizing the relationship between students and teacher. Gives prompt feedback • Instant Messenger extends the availability of the teacher beyond office hours and the campus classroom/office. Students who may never visit a teacher’s office will communicate using Instant Messenger to clarify expectations and ask questions. • Students have questions while working on homework assignments that they may not bring to class later. Instant Messenger allows them to frequently get an immediate answer and avoid misunderstandings while they are working on course work.
