Valuing People jobs vision – based on citizenship • Belief– we are all employable and have gifts to offer • Citizens have a right to work • Responsibility– citizens are expected to work and are challenged when they do not work
Partnership Board Jobs Survey 2011 Sent out to: • People with a learning disability that get a service from the Medway Team for Adults with a Learning Disability, Adult Social Care • Students at Mid Kent College supported learning courses • Shout Out members
Number of surveys? Over 490 surveys were sent out 177 surveys were returned 720 people on the Medway GP Learning Disability Register
How many people have a job? • 17 people out of 177 people have a paid job (10%) • 23 people out of 177 people volunteer • Only 3 people out of 177 have a paid job and volunteer • Just over half the people who returned the survey wanted a paid job
What support is needed to have a paid job? • About a third of people, who returned a survey, thought they needed… • Transport to be provided to and from work to get a paid job • Support in a workplace • Just over half (51%) of people, who returned a survey, thought they needed more training to get a paid job • Nearly everyone (95.7%) on Mid Kent College supported learning courses thought that they needed more training to get a paid job
Who did people ask for job support? • Just under half (48%) of the people who returned a survey and answered this question said that they had asked ‘nobody’ for job support • A quarter of people (25.9%) who returned a survey, said that they had asked either Medway Youth Trust or Job Centre Plus for job support • A fifth (20%) of people, who returned a survey, said that they had asked their family to support to find a paid job
When did people ask last ask for job support? • 16.8% of people, who returned a survey, said that they had asked for help to find a paid job in the last 6 months • A fifth (19.2%) of people, who returned the survey, said that they had asked over 6 months ago for support to find a paid job • Half the people who returned a survey did not answer this question
What did the survey find out about Disability Employment Advisors? • 14% of people who returned the survey had seen a Disability Employment Advisor • 71% of people who returned the survey said that they had not seen a Disability Employment Advisor
What next? • Valuing People says that Learning Disability Partnership Boards need to have an jobs plan • There needs to be a BIG change in Medway for EVERYONE if more people are going to be in paid jobs • Partnership Board activity
