What is the Challenge? • Voluntary program open to state, regional, and local government agencies • Sponsored by Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) • Non-profit dedicated to sustainability through waste management and environmentally preferable purchases • Funding through EPA grant • Pilot program • Includes 10 northeast states (CT, DE, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT)
What are the goals of the Challenge? • Recruit “Partners” • Purchase environmentally preferable computer products • Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) [www.epeat.net/] • Use power management features • Energy Star [www.energystar.gov/] • Extend the lifespan of computers • Selective upgrades and donations • Recycle computers in environmentally sound manner
What type of electronic equipment is targeted? • Computer equipment • Desktop computers and monitors, and laptop computers • Initial target • Ubiquitous in public agencies • National environmental performance standards for purchasing (EPEAT)
What are the Program Requirements? • Baseline & Annual Reporting Form • Complete within four weeks of joining • Annually thereafter • Program Requirement Checklist • Completed January 31 following year • Acquisition & Procurement • Operation & Maintenance • End-of-life Management

Achievements (cont) • Measurable environmental benefits, reduction in: • Energy usage by 0.9 million KWh • Electricity to annually power 77 households • Greenhouse gas emissions by 148 MTCE • Removing 99 passenger cars from the roadway • Municipal solid waste by 13.5 metric tons • Amount of waste generated by 7 households • Toxic materials, including lead and mercury, by 165 pounds (Above calculated using Environmental Benefits Calculator, Version 2.0) • Nominated for USEPA Region 2 Environmental Quality Award by NERC
