SC2 report to the POB 19.9.2005 M.Kasemann Contents: • SC2 reviewed and discussed: • LCG progress report Q2/2005 (26.8.2005) (only one session over summer…) SC2 report to POB M.Kasemann
A summary look at milestones as defined for LCG Phase 1 LCG Phase 2 Now… • LCG Milestones have been adjusted to updated plans • Milestones were eliminated that are no longer pursued or where different milestones have been established instead. This lead to a cleaner picture and improvement of the status report. SC2 report to POB M.Kasemann
Review of LCG Quarterly Report: Q2/05 Applications: • The SEAL + ROOT merger is going ahead • … agreed activities are going on, but… • detailed planning was the next major, high priority milestone after the internal review in AprilQ2/05: Planning is lacking behind • Agreeing to the plan is important, major issues are:- support of the existing SEAL package until merged library fully replaces SEAL in the experiments software- ATLAS, CMS and LHCb want to avoid dependencies of the merged library on ROOT. • In the Q2/05 status report this planning process is not finished and no agreed set of milestones exist! • We consider this key to the success of the AA re-organization to reach agreement on an AA plan and to set milestones! • The Architects Forum (AF) is the forum to solve this and reach agreement, then the PEB. Review of LCG Quarterly Report: Q2/05 Fabric Area: • New CASTOR version was delivered in June and migration plan agreed. • SC2 recommends to use release-numbers for CASTOR • SC2 recommends to define milestones for CASTOR interfaces for each experiment • CASTOR migration schedule agreed early summer • First migration experience show a slower than expected progress • this will delay the migration plan and should be watched closely • This may become a serious concern for the LHC experiments SC2 report to POB M.Kasemann
Review of LCG Quarterly Report: Q2/05 Grid Deployment: • The service challenge 3 throughput test in early summer achieved 500 MB at CERN. • Reliability was not satisfying • Exercise was stopped, tests with individual sites followed. See more details in the LCG report to this POB. • From the last SC2 report to the POB: • The SC2 endorses the proposal, that future deployment area quarterly reports should include status reports on US and Nordic grid infrastructure projects, including progress towards milestones to achieve the required service levels. • We are not in a position to make this happen…, it she should be pursued by the experiments in the LCG project • We observe a good working relationship with OSG. Review of LCG Quarterly Report: Q2/05 Middleware and ARDA: ARDA: • It is the opinion of the SC2, that the usage of gLite components in the ARDA prototypes should be increased, in order to profitfrom common functionality andlong-term maintenance and support. • The SC2 will follow this up in the detailed discussion on MW and ARDA scheduled in our October session SC2 report to POB M.Kasemann
Review of LCG Quarterly Report: Q2/05 On Middleware: • The SC2 recommends to use a more detailed reporting metrics: • Overall job success rate: in the end this is the important number for the experiments, but • for the analysis of failures and improvement work it is not specific enough • Need more detailed failure analysis, should be reported • Statistical bug reporting by functionality and code package is available in the report. • The report becomes more meaningful for users if it is complemented by a severity classification and a schedule for resolving the problem. Next SC2 meetings • October 14: • Detailed MW and ARDA presentation and discussion • November 25: • Review of Q3/05 status report • December 16: (…if the SC2 still exists…) • Detailed Fabric area presentation and discussion SC2 report to POB M.Kasemann
