Welcome to the SGHS Class of 2019! This guide provides information on graduation requirements, course load, class schedule, electives, and important dates for registration. Choose your courses wisely and get involved in clubs and activities to make the most of your high school experience. Email Meghan Burris or Don Griffin for more information.

  1. HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION Welcome to the SGHS Class of 2019

  2. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

  3. To be promoted to 10th grade, Students must have 6 credits, one of which is English I. ATTENDANCE COUNTS! Students automatically fail a course after 8 absences of any kind in a single class period. Course Load: Students must carry a course load equal to number of instructional periods in school day (4/semester). 4x4 PROMOTION Tip: Sign up for Parent Portal

  4. 1ST SEMESTER Math I World History Health/PE Elective 2ND SEMESTER English I Earth Science Elective Elective Sample BLOCK SCHEDULE This is just an example. This is not the exact schedule your student will receive.

  5. Required Classes • English I (Honors Available) • Math I (Honors Available) Math II (Honors Available) Math III (Honors Available) • Earth/Environmental Science (Honors Available) • World History (Honors Available) • Health & PE • 3 Electives (one MUST be in school selected)

  6. Selecting Electives • One elective must be in the school student selected. The following courses are ones you must chose for your school. • For HLS students, Health Team Relationships or AgriscienceApplications • For ITL students, MSITA, Marketing, Career Management, JROTC, Intro to Computer Programming *Please make sure you are comfortable with the alternate electives you choose since preference for these courses will be given to upperclassmen.

  7. Course Sequencing • English (4 required) • __English I (standard or honors) • __English II (standard or honors) • __English III (standard, honors, or AP) • __English IV (standard, honors, or AP) • Honors English I will have summer reading assignment.

  8. Math Sequence • Foundations of Math/Math I • Math I (standard or honors) • Math II (standard or honors) • Math III (standard or honors) • Advanced Functions & Modeling, or Precalculus, or Discrete Math • A.P. Calculus, or A.P. Statistics • 4 Required

  9. Science Sequence • Earth & Environmental (standard, honors) • Physical Science or Biology • Biology or Chemistry 3 Required

  10. Social Studies Sequence • World History (standard or honors) • American Hist. I (standard or honors) • American Hist. II (standard or honors) • Civics and Economics OR • World History, AP US History, Civics and Economics, and Social Studies Elective 4 Courses Required

  11. PE and Foreign Language • Health/PE required freshman year. Pass or retake as a senior. Foreign Language: Must have 2 credits in same language if going to 4 year university. Not required for community college, but I recommend it anyway.

Health and Life Elective Options • Agriscience Applications • Animal Science I • Equine Science I • Horticulture I • Health Team Relations • Strength and Conditioning • Journalism • Creative Writing • Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, ect. • JROTC I, II • Visual Arts • Chorus/Ensemble/VV • Marching/Concert Band • Guitar • Career Management • Online options also

  13. Integrated Tech. and Leadership • Marketing • Microsoft Word, Power. Etc. • Career Management • Introduction to Computer Science • Principles of Business • Strength and Conditioning • Journalism • Creative Writing • JROTC I, II • Visual Arts • Chorus/Ensemble/VV • Marching/Concert Band • Guitar • Online Classes

  14. Athletics • Ninth graders are eligible to play any fall sport because they were promoted. Grades and attendance will determine eligibility after school begins. • Must have updated physicals • Questions: colgandl@gcs.k12.nc.us

SGHS get the BEST welcome ever! • LINK CREW (11th, 12th grade leaders) host orientation just for the students right before school starts • Students receive letter at end of year • Will receive personal phone call just before • Fun activities with meaning and purpose to learn what every freshman should know

  17. Important Dates • Monday, April 6th: Registration opens in PowerSchool for all rising 9th Graders • Friday, May 1st: Registration closes for all schools .
