Welcome • You have been accepted to the Health IT Workforce Training Program for the Practice Workflow and Information Management Redesign Specialist and the Implementation Support Specialist offered through the Fresno City College Training Institute • This training is part of the Health IT Workforce Development Program, administered by Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology • The goal of this national program is to help train more than 10,500 new health IT professionals annually by 2012. An increased workforce of skilled health IT specialists will be important in supporting providers as they transition to electronic health records • More than 70 community colleges, including FCC, are participating in this two year training program
Role 1 - Practice Workflow & Information Management Redesign Specialist • General Description • Workers in this role assist in reorganizing the work of a provider to take full advantage of the features of health IT in pursuit of meaningful use of health IT to improve health and care. • Suggested Background • Individuals in this role may have backgrounds in health care (for example, as a practice administrator) or in information technology, but are not licensed clinical professionals.
Practice Workflow & Information Management Redesign Specialist Competencies • Document the workflow and information management models of the practice. • Conduct user requirements analysis to facilitate workflow design. • Develop revised workflow and information management models for the practice, based on meaningful use of a certified EHR product. Revised models will anticipate implementation of: • General practice automation (e.g. appointment scheduling) to the extent not yet implemented • Electronic documentation and results review • Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) • Clinical decision support (CDS) • Health information exchange to include: • Sending of lab orders and receipt of results using CPOE • Quality improvement and reporting • E-Prescribing • Other EHR functionalities as required by the Stage 1 Meaningful Use definition for 2011 and its evolution into Stage 2 in 2013 and Stage 3 in 2015.
Practice Workflow & Information Management Redesign Specialist Competencies – continued • As the practice implements the EHR, work directly with practice personnel to implement the revised workflow and information management model. • Working with practice staff, develop a set of plans to keep the practice running if the EHR system fails. • Working with practice staff, evaluate the new processes as implemented, identify problems and changes that are needed, and implement these changes. • Design processes and information flows for the practice that accommodate quality improvement and reporting
Role 2 – Implementation Support Specialist • General Description • Workers in this role provide on-site user support for the period of time before and during implementation of health IT systems in clinical and public health settings. These individuals will provide support services, above and beyond what is provided by the vendor, to be sure the technology functions properly and is configured to meet the needs of the redesigned practice workflow. • Suggested Background • Individuals training for this role will have a general background in information technology or health information management.
Implementation Support Specialist Competencies • Workers in this role will be able to: • Execute implementation project plans, by installing hardware (as needed) and configuring software to meet practice needs. • Incorporate usability principles into software configuration and implementation • Test the software against performance specifications. • Interact with the vendors as needed to rectify technical problems that occur during the deployment process. • Proactively identify software or hardware incompatibilities.
Implementation Support Specialist Competencies – con’t • Assist the practice in identifying a data back-up and recovery solution, and ensure the solution is effective. • Ensure that the mechanism for hardware/software recovery (e.g., data backup or redundant systems) and related capabilities are appropriately implemented to minimize system downtime. • Ensure that privacy and security functions are appropriately configured and activated in hardware and software. • Document IT problems and evaluate the effectiveness of problem resolution. • Assist end users with the execution of audits.
Training Program Schedule • The Health IT training is completed over six months • March 28, 2011 through September 9, 2011 • The training is broken down into three sessions • Session 1: March 28, 2011 to May 20, 2011 • Session 2: May 23, 2011 to July 15, 2011 • Session 3: July 18, 2011 to September 9, 2011
Curriculum • Courses are taught online in Blackboard, a learning management system. There are no face-to-face meetings. • Each session will have three or four courses for a total of 10 or 11 courses for the training program depending on the Role specialization you choose in Session 3. • Everyone takes the same required classes in Session 1 and Session 2. Session 3 is the specialization track and you will take the classes required for the Role you choose.

Blackboard • Blackboard is a learning management system for hosting online classes • All of the course materials you need will be delivered through Blackboard – no textbooks • The Blackboard site URL: http://blackboard.fresnocitycollege.edu • Links to the Blackboard site are found on the FCC Website (http://www.fresnocitycollege.edu) under Quick Links and Distance Learning
Blackboard • A student ID# will be sent to you in an e-mail prior to the training start date • Log in to Blackboard during the first week of training using your student ID# as your Username and Password (same number entered for both) • Once logged in you will see the Start page with your training courses listed under My Courses. • Click on the title of the course and you will enter the course site. Be sure to open each of the courses required – four courses in Session 1. • Instructors will provide further information and instructions for getting started in their classes in the announcements page in each class.
Technical and Software Requirements • Your computer's operating system should have Microsoft Windows (XP or above works best) or Macintosh (OS X or above works best) • Any computer with a Pentium, Pentium clone, or PowerPC should work. Of course, the faster your processor speed (300 MHz or above), the better the performance • RAM - 64 MB is probably the minimum, 128 MB is better, and 256 MB or higher is preferred • Web browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox work best with Blackboard. If you are using Windows XP, IE 7 or 8 will work. If you are a Mac user, you should use Firefox
Technical and Software Requirements • Internet Service Provider: It doesn't matter which ISP you use; just make sure it's reliable. If you use AOL, minimize it after launching, then open Internet Explorer or Firefox to use Blackboard • Plugins: In order to view certain multimedia elements and documents on the Web, you need specific plugins. Your instructor will tell you exactly which plugins you need for your course. The most popular are Windows Media, QuickTime, RealPlayer, Flash, Shockwave, and Acrobat Reader, and they are all freely downloadable. • Multimedia: DVD-ROM drive with speakers
Technical and Software Requirements • Lab assignments are required for this course: • Working with Health IT Systems in Session 1 and other classes in Session 3 • A DVD with VistA CPRS will be sent to your when you are enrolled in classes requiring this specific software. You must be able to run this software on your own PC. The following technical requirements apply: • The installation DVD contains approximately 2 gigabytes of data. In order for the VistA system to install and run properly on a PC, the PC must have 5 gigabytes of available space on its hard drive. The VistA application will run under Windows 2000, XP Pro, Vista, or 7. The VA CPRS has been reported to run smoothly on XP Home as long as it is not used in a networked environment. Users are advised however that XP Home is not a supported operating system for the VistA CPRS. The system will not run under MacOS but we have preliminary evidence that it will run on a Mac using a Windows XP virtual machine.
Completing the Training Program • This intensive training program requires students to commit up to 30 hours per week for study and assignments • Examples of assignments: PowerPoint lectures and notes, articles to read, Web sites to research, discussion board topics, written reports, essay questions, lab and application exercises, and quizzes • Students must complete the required courses with a grade of C or higher • A grade of C or higher will result in “Credit” for the course. A grade lower than C will result in “No Credit”
Completion of the Training Program • Completion of these courses through the FCC Training Institute will not result in college units and the courses are not transferable for college credit • Students who successfully complete all of the courses in the training program will receive a certificate of completion
