3. On 31st December people all over the Britain meet to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one. They meet at the parties to have fun and wait for midnight. The most famous meeting place in London is Piccadilly Circus or Trafalgar Square. When the clock strikes 12,people shake hands, throw hats, dance, sing, kiss and wish ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR’. In Scotland, New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay. The Scots have a custom of ‘first footing’ New Year’s Day -1st January – is not so noisy. People go to parties or watch parades and football games. New Year’s Day is also a day when people make New Year’s resolutions. They promise to learn or work better, to lose weight, to give up bad habits. Unfortunately, most people forget their resolutions the day after.

5. 14February St Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14th February. It is the Day of Lovers. The day got its name from Valentinus – a saint who lived in the 3rd century. He he;ped the Christians persecuted by the Romans. The Roman emperor put Valentine in prison and ordered to kill him. On 14th February Valentine wrote a farewell letter to his friend and signed it ‘From your Valentine’. He died on the same day. Today people send valentine cards, flowers and gifts to their sweethearts and friends. Valentines cards must be anonymous, colourful, with picture of hearts, flowers, kittens,white doves or cupids.

7. The last day of carnival is calledc Shrove Thuesday. The next day is Ash Wednesday and it is the beginning of the forty days of Lent. Easter time comes with PalmSunday – the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday begins Holy Week. On Maundy Thursday – the day which commemorates the Last Supper – the British Queen gives money to the poor. She gives them two purses – red one with money for food, white one with Moundy coins (the number of the coins is the same as the Queen’s age). EASTER The traditional symbols of Easter are dyed eggs, the Easter Lamb, the Easter Hare or Rabbit and Easter lilies.

10. The April Fools’ Day custom is that from midnight till noon you can play practical jokes (pranks) on others. You may write: ‘Kick me’ on a piece of paper and stick it to your friend’s back. Some prankers prepare purses full of paper, put them on the pavement and wait. When somebody opens the purse, they shout: ‘April Fool.’ Adult also like playing jokes. They may tell their friend that he must phone the given telephone number because Mr Seal wants to speak to him. Of course, the number they give is the phone number of the zoo. Another favourite joke is ‘crying wolf’ and ‘hunting the gowk victim’. Jokes

13. In the ancient time, the Celts believed that on the last day of their year, 31st October, the spirits of the dead visited the earth in order to find another body to live in. Nobody wanted a ghost to live in their body so they lit bonfires and dressed in animal skins to protect themselves. In the 9th century the Roman Catholic church named 1st November All Saints’ Day. Some people who believed in witchcraft were against it and celebrated the Night of the Witch on 31st October. Halloween means the Eve of All Saints (Hallows). Today it is a very popular holiday in the USA and Britain. On Halloween children put on costumes, they disguise themselves as witches, goblins, monsters, ghosts or fairies and walk from house to house, saying ‘Trick or treat’. This means that if you do not give them any sweets (treats) they will play a trick on you. They may soap windows, put a pin into your doorbell, pour water or throw flour on your door. The symbols of Halloween is the jack-o’-lantern that is pumpkin with cut out eyes, nose and mouth and a candle inside.
