Plants don’t all reproduce the same way! Three ways plants reproduce: • Seeds • Spores • Parts of a plant
Seeds Most plants reproduce from seeds. A seed contains two things: • embryo-beginning of a new plant • Food needed for the new plant to grow The Lucky seed: http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/short-stories/the-lucky-seed Watch a plant grow from a seed:http://school.nettrekker.com/goExternal?np=/external.ftl&pp=/error.ftl&evlCode=299807&productName=school&HOMEPAGE=E
Spores • A few plants, like ferns, reproduce from spores • A spore is a single cell that can grow into a new plant. Spores are released into the air by water or wind. When they land on damp ground they grow into a new plant.
Vegetative Reproduction Vegetative Reproduction is when plants reproduce from parts of the plant. Examples of vegetative reproduction: • Runner • Rhizome • Tuber • Bulb
Runner Strawberry plants reproduce through runners.
Rhizome A rhizome is like a horizontal plant stem that grows under ground. Examples: asparagus, ginger
Bulb-underground storage organ examples: daffodil, onion
