Overview • The Core Alcohol and Drug Survey was administered in Spring 2012 to measure alcohol and other drug use, attitudes and perceptions at Santa Fe College. • The study was created at the Core Institute at Southern Illinois University, which boasts the “largest national Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) database about college student's drinking and drug use in the country” http://core.siu.edu/. • From a population of 4,665 SF students between the ages of 18 and 20, 1000 were randomly selected and contacted by email to complete an on-line questionnaire.

  3. Sample Demographics • The response rate for SF was 11.1%, as only 111 students completed the survey. • While the data presented here is not generalizable to the total student population at SF, it does provide a starting point for understanding the culture of alcohol and drug use at SF. • Characteristics • 60.4% were female • 79.3% were full-time students • 44.5% worked part-time or full-time • The reference group/national average is based on data from 61,057 students in 118 institutions across the nation.

Student Knowledge About The College • 35.1% said they ‘don’t know’ if the College has drug and alcohol policies. • 75.5% said they ‘don’t know’ if the College has an alcohol and drug prevention program. • 33.6% said they ‘don’t know’ if the College is concerned about the prevention of drug and alcohol use.

  19. Student Beliefs About Their Peers • 86.8% believe that the average SF student uses alcohol once a week or more. • 69.8% believe that the average SF student uses some form of illegal drugs at least once a week. • 33.3% believe that SF students care about alcohol and other drug use.

  20. On-Campus Efforts • Student Health Care Center • Provides wellness education and counseling with a registered nurse. • Offers a Stay Safe @ Santa Fe website with alcohol tips and info. • Counseling Center • Provides counseling for those students suffering from drug and alcohol related issues. • Provides referrals to self-help support groups, community agencies, and private providers for those in need of treatment for alcohol and other drug problems. • Offers a Living & Learningseminar on Alcohol, Drugs, and Life Choices. • Student Life • Sponsors theme weeks, programs, and awareness activities. • Also provides informational materials on drugs and alcohol.

  21. New On-Campus Efforts • E-Check Up To Go • A 7-minute, self-guided, interactive web survey allowing students to enter info about their drinking patterns and receive 1) feedback about their use of alcohol and 2) referrals to community resources. • Alcohol & Drug Task Force • Charged with 1) exploring the culture of alcohol and drug use at SF 2) reviewing best practices in alcohol and drug prevention and intervention 3) helping to increase awareness of alcohol and drug-related problems and 4) recommending alcohol and drug-related policies, practices and programs for Santa Fe College. • Student Conduct Code Revision • Will be taking a close look at our drug and alcohol policies.
