BRICKS BACKGROUND I • Reinforcement of “knowledge society” within Europe and the Netherlands according to Lisbon 2000; • WeBu (OCW) en Innovation letter (EZ)  key technology:ICT; • ICES-KIS  BSIK initiative (M€ 800); • National Research Agenda Informatics (NOAG-i) 2001- 2005 (NWO); • Concurreren met ICT-Competenties (EZ);

  3. BRICKS Background IINWO additional funding 2003-2004 • NWO M€ 10 for Computer Science until 2007 • NWOM€ 5 structural additional funding for Computer Science as of 2008 • NWO M€ 2.4 for GRID technology • NWO M€ 3 for BRICKS

BRICKS special features • The only fundamental research project within Bsik • The only project within Bsik with explicit mathematical input • A strong incentive for fundamental research in computer science (M€ 12 grant for BRICKS) • Cooperation between NWO-Physical Sciences, NWO-institute CWI and four universities (TU/E, TUD, UU, UT) • New challenges within the priority areas of the NOAG-i
