2. Early life and Education • Born in New York City on October 27, 1858 • His family owned successful plate-glass import business. • Homeschooled due to his illnesses and asthma. • He entered Harvard University on September 27, 1876. He studied biology intently and was already an accomplished naturalistand published ornithologist • He entered Columbia Law School and was an able student, but found the law often a frustration of irrationality. • When pushed to run for public office, he dropped out of law school to pursue his new goal, saying later "I intended to be one of the governing class."

3. Occupations • He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1882, 1883, and 1884. • In 1883, he was the GOP minority candidate for Speaker. • In 1886, Roosevelt was the Republican ("GOP") candidate for mayor of New York City. • President Harrison appointed Roosevelt to the United States Civil Service Commission, where he served until 1895. • Roosevelt became president of the board of New York City Police Commissionersin 1895 for two years. • Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897. • Became Governor of New York in 1898. • Vice President from March to September 1901 • President of the United States from September 14, 1901 to March 4, 1909

4. Environmental Contributions • Credited with starting the environmental protection agency (EPA) and starting the National Park system. • He repeatedly lobbied Congress to pass measures for the conservation of forests, water, soil and wildlife. • He designated Pelican Island, Florida the first National Wildlife Refuge in 1903. • He proceeded to place large areas of land under federal protection during his presidency, about 230 million acres in total.  • 1906 Antiquities Act, which gave a president the ability to designate areas as national monuments without Congressional approval.

5. Why is he important to APES? Teddy Roosevelt fits in with our study of environmental science in many ways including: • Unit 2- Conservation Biology, Policies, and Laws, Wildlife Management He has done many things to conserve land and wildlife, and is one of the biggest names when it comes to conservation. • Unit 9- Policy, Government, and Education He passed many laws and acts on the legislative side of things that effect the environment greatly.

7. Boxing Theodore Roosevelt's interest in boxing was well-known, but an injury he suffered from it while president was one of the best-kept secrets of his administration. After he reached the White House, Roosevelt continued his hobby of inviting sparring partners to box, a practice he started as governor of New York.
