  2. How does Troy react to Al’s presence? • He hates having Al there. • Troy begins to undermine Al’s leadership by telling others they don’t need him.

  3. What happens during the Hance Rapid run? • Al charts strategy for the moves through the rapids. • Star is his partner in the oared raft. • Al guides the boat safely through the rapid. • Freddy’s expertise at paddling the other boat keeps it from flipping. The group celebrates.

  4. What happens at the Phantom Ranch landing? • The group plans to go ashore. When they arrive, they see park rangers and a policeman and realize Al has arranged to have them picked up. • Pug pulls his knife on Al, and the group escapes down the river.
