Featured Exhibit • The cassowary is a keystone species to Australia and New Guinea playing a vital role in the growth of the rainforest. Known as the Gardener of the Rainforest, cassowaries can germinate more than 200 species of plants, thus providing food for other species. • Unfortunately, their populations are declining due to loss of habitat, vehicle strike, dog attacks and overhunting. They are considered endangered in Australia with an estimated population between 1,500 to 2,500 birds. In captivity, breeding of this species has been very limited, and as a result the captive population’s genetic diversity is low.
