  4. What is the Definition of Cyberbullying? • Cyberbullyingis defined as bullying that takes place using electronic technology, including cellphones, computers, and tablets.

  9. What are some examples of Cyberbullying?

What are some examples of cyberbullying? • Writing hurtful things through texting, online messages, email, or online games • Posting hurtful and derogatory messages on social media. • Posting or sharing embarrassing pictures or videos of someone. • Creating a fake profile in order to humiliate someone else.

Why is cyberbullying different than any other type of bullying? • Cyberbullying affects victims in a different way than traditional bullying. • Bullying can follow a victim everywhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • From school, to the mall, and all the way in to your home. • In traditional bullying usually the home is a safe place where you do not have to worry about being bullied. Cyberbullying follows you around where ever you go.

Bullying and the Law • In some cases bullying can be against the law. • These include • Threats – done either face-to-face, online, over the phone or through text messaging. • Assaults – including pushing, tripping, slapping, hitting, or spitting. • Theft of personal items – like a backpack, books, cell phones, ipads, etc. • Sexual Exploitation – sharing videos or photos with nudity of people under 18. • Hate crime – bullying based on ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, etc.

  13. Why Do People Cyberbully? • People sometimes say or do things online that they wouldn’t say or do face-to-face. • Makes you feel POWERFUL. • Maybe you need to feel like you’re in CONTROL.

  14. What can you do to be safe online?

  15. What are the steps to take if you are bullied online? • Don’t write back. • Don’t give the the bully any response they are looking for. If you send back a threatening post you could also get yourself in trouble. • Make a copy. • It is important to save all bullying messages, posts or pictures. • Block the bully. • Leave. • Remove yourself from the situation. Don’t go back to the environments that you have experienced bullying in. • Tell someone • Tell an adult that you trust about bullying.

  16. If it gets really bad… • Call for help, harassment, threats, and blackmail, and intimidation are all illegal. Ask an adult to contact the police.

  17. Other things you can do to protect yourself from cyberbullying • If you get a harassing phone call on a landline, dial *57 immediately when the call ends.
