  1. WASTEWATER ENGINEERING FOR MUNICIPALITIES. RAND WATER – FEB.2017

  2. The State of Sewage in South Africa.

  3. SOME STATISTICS. • In 2010, an estimated 11 million South Africans still did not have access to improved sanitation: They used shared facilities (4 million), bucket toilets (3 million) or practiced open defecation (4 million.) • The health impacts of inadequate sanitation can be serious, as evidenced by the estimated 1.5 million cases of diarrhoea in children under five and the 2001 outbreak of cholera.

  4. BLUE DROP CERTIFICATION In 2009, 23 water supply systems obtained the Blue Drop certification. In 2010, 9 lost it and 24 gained it for the first time, bringing the total to 38 (less than 5 percent) out of 787 systems that were assessed. The three top performers were Johannesburg, Cape Town and the small town of Bitou.

  5. 2014 Non-financial census of municipalities report Fifty-one South African municipalities provided bucket toilets to communities in 2014. Of the 51 municipalities: 13 municipalities reported a rise in municipal bucket toilet provision in 2014. 22 municipalities reported no change in bucket toilet provision.

  6. Reasons for poor state of WWTP’s. • Poor maintenance of existing plants, • Outdated technologies, • Inadequate funding, • Misallocation and misappropriation of funds, • Lack of skilled operators, • Poor payment recoveries.

  7. Wastewater Treatment Plants for Industry, Municipal and Domestic Water Treatment Plants Bacterial additives Reverse Osmosis and Membrane Treatment.

  8. PROFESSIONAL SERVICES OFFERED: • Manufacturing Facility – Witbank • Manufacturing Facility - George • Mechanical Engineers, • Electrical Engineers, • Microbiologists, • Agricultural Engineers B-BBEE Status: Level 2 Procurement Recognition Level: 125%

  14. FULL SPECTRUM OF PLANT SIZES OFFERED.

  15. DIY / Homeowners WWTP:

  16. DIY / Homeowners WWTP: • DAILY FLOW : 600L to 20’000L per day • These plants are a very cost effective alternative solution to septic tanks and soakaways allowing the client to re-use final effluent. These plants are designed for small applications such as households, lodges and small commercial and industrial applications. The DIY Range offer the client the opportunity to install the system themselves which also offers a capital saving. We offer above and below ground options available • ADVANTAGES • This is the most cost effective range offered. • Complete system is constructed and tested before installation. • The system life expectancy is 7 to 10 years • Reduced installation cost, due to ease of installation. • Maintenance is easy and uncomplicated

  17. Modular HDPE Tank - WWTP:

  18. Modular HDPE Tank - WWTP: • DAILY FLOW : 600L to 200’000L per day • The HDPE tanks systems are the most cost effective BWWTP for medium flow applications in the SewTreat offering. The plant is an above ground installation and therefore easily expanded on and maintained due to this fact. • The complete system is a modular system made of Plastic HDPE tanks. • The whole installation is Above Ground • Multiple tanks can be connected to form a large treatment plant. • The installation requires a concrete slab to be cast, onto which the tanks can be installed. • The effluent needs to be collected in a feed sump or screen from where the effluent is pumped into the plant • Screen can be placed below ground or inline from the feed pump.

  19. Containerized - WWTP:

  20. Containerized - WWTP: • DAILY FLOW : 5’000 to 300’000 liters per day • The containerized plants are specifically designed for ease of transport and taking into consideration that the plant may be moved to various locations. These plants can be used at construction camps, mining applications or any other remote site. The plants are complete “plug and play” and can be easily moved from site to site • The complete system is installed in ISO Containers - Refurbished. • Multiple containers can be connected to form a large treatment plant. • The installation requires a concrete slab to be cast. • The effluent needs to be collected in a feed sump or screen from where the effluent is pumped into the plant • Mechanical equipment is installed in a container to serve as control room.

  21. Mega Range – Civil - WWTP:

  22. Mega Range – Civil - WWTP: • DAILY FLOW : 100’000 to 50’000’000 liters per day • The civil constructed plants are designed and constructed mostly for large flow industrial and housing development applications. The plants are aesthetically pleasing as it is constructed underground and can be covered with vegetation. The plants are entirely civil designed & constructed to exact civil engineering requirements. • This is civil engineered and constructed system. • The system incorporate the full treatment spectrum • Depending on contour levels the plant can be constructed above ground or below ground. • All pipe reticulation is done inside the plant to increase the life expectancy of the pipes. • All electrical and mechanical equipment is installed within the control room.

  23. Mega Range – Steel Tanks - WWTP: • DAILY FLOW : 100’000 to 50’000’000 liters per day • The corrugated steel tank system allows for easy installation above ground with minimal requirements for civil works. This system allows for quicker installation than opposed to that of a civil constructed system for large volume plants. This is the most cost effective system in the industry for large scale applications • This is highly engineered system with life expectancy of 20 years • The system can be designed to scale up, for example if the first 1000 houses are being built, a phase 1 WWTP can be built , as phase two starts, the second phase WWTP can be built. • The system incorporate the full treatment spectrum • All electrical and mechanical equipment is installed within the control room. • This is a fully automated system

  24. Electrical Control & Remote Monitoring: • Electrical reliability and control of WWTP is imperative in the operation of WWTP’s. SewTreat have implemented the GSM control unit which provides real time reporting and alerts for electrical outages, pump failure and other measuring equipment that might have been included such as DO meters. • Alerts include : • Mechanical equipment on/off • Electrical outages • These features are included in the maintenance package, and will be linked with the SewTreat website, which offers the following: • Track operational run time • Real time updates on Plant Status. • Access by the client to status • Setting of alerts (Priority 1 – 3) • Portal for analysis input for record purposes • Added bonuses will include: • Runtime Graph • Water Result Graph • Real time access to WWTP Electricals

  25. Bacteria Microbes: Our bacteria is organic and natural, completely safe and pathogen free. It has a guaranteed shelf life of 2 years. The nature of our consortium leads to an interesting phenomenon that is explained in its simplest form as self selection. Because we have such a wide range of bacteria functioning over different processes our bacteria flourishes in almost any environment. The moment it is introduced into a system the availability of different types of waste will encourage the growth of the specific bacteria for that type of waste. This gives us the most successful bio augmentation product on the market today.

  26. New Innovations: • Non-Electrical complete WWTP • Uses no electricity • 50% reduction in Capex & 20% reduction Opex • Waste to Food WWTP • By diversion of the effluent just before disinfection, the high bacteria count ensures sufficient feed for specific cultured Daphnia (Small plank-tonic crustaceans) , which is high in protein, which in turn is fed to farmable fish. • Creating a sustainable fish farm, with no feed Opex cost, this ensures high quality protein produced at very low Opex cost
