Translation of Jewish scriptures into Greek – 3rd century BC -- Egypt • Why? Greek rulers wanted a copy of the Law of Jewish subjects • 1 & 2 Maccabees, Sirach, Wisdom, Baruch, Tobit, Judith – deuterocanonical (second canon) – written in Greek, not Hebrew • Used by all Christians – until the Protestant Reformation in 16th century • Protestants rejected books not written in Hebrew • Why? (1) not quoted in the New Testament; (2) Reaction to Council of Trent
