Solid Waste Baler/ConveyorActivity: NAVSTA San Diego Benefits • Reduces generation of solid wastes and associated disposal costs • Diverts solid wastes from landfills • Compacts and bales recyclable materials including :paper, cardboard, and metals • Supports activity’s recycling goals • Compacted bales are sold to local recyclers to reduce operational costs of recycling program Return on Investment and Break Even Point • $126,000 (per 10-year period) • 5 years Status • Implemented at 3 installations as of the first quarter of FY98 Large baler compacts and bales cardboard, paper and light gauge non-ferrous metal with a bale weight up to 1500 pounds. The baling cycle is 140 seconds. System includes: 100 horsepower electrical motor, manual, semi-automatic, and automatic electrical controls, air-cooled heat exchanger, conveyor control, bale discharge platform, upper and lower sonic sensors, and hopper extension
