  2. Prompt #1 • Discuss the exchange between Beowulf and Unferth. What characteristics does the exchange reveal about each of the men? What does it reveal about the values of the society in which the story occurs?

  3. Prompt #2 • Retell the story of the fight between Beowulf and Grendel from Grendel’s point of view.

  4. Prompt #3 • What is the literary purpose of the historical digression relative to the story of Finn? Stylistically does this help or hurt the piece and why?

  5. Prompt #5 • Select and discuss an example of dichotomy in the text. How does this stylistic choice aid in the art of the work?

  6. Prompt #6 • Stylistic elements in the poem. Based on the examples of kennings discussed in class, write an example of a compound, a prepositional, and a possessive kenning of your own and indicate the translation for each.
