Standards and Degree Requirements for Master’s Degree Programs • Minimum Credit Requirements • Types of Plans • Time Limits • Plans of Study • Transfer Credits • Final Exams • Current Student Information
Minimum Credit Requirements • The Graduate School requires a minimum of 24 credits for a master’s program • Some programs may require more than 24 credit
Types of Plans • Plan A (Thesis) - requires no fewer than 15 credits of coursework and no fewer than nine (9) credits of GRAD 5950 or 5960 as well as writing, oral defense and submission of a thesis. • Plan B (Non-Thesis) – Requires no fewer than 24 credits of advanced coursework and a comprehensive final examination.
Time Limits • Ordinarily a masters degree should be completed within three (3) years. In any event all work for a masters degree must be completed within six (6) years. • A one time extension of the student’s terminal date of no longer than two (2) years is considered only when substantial evidence is provided that the student has made regular and consistent progress toward completion.
Plan of Study • Master’s plan of study must be submitted no later than the beginning of the student’s final semester. The student’s committee members are stated at the time the plan of study is signed and submitted. • All students are admitted as Master’s Plan B unless we are notified or the plan of study is submitted.
Transfer Credits Advanced coursework taken as non-degree student at UCONN can account for 25% of the credits required. The course(s) must be: • Graduate Level Course(s) • Graded as a B or better (not B-) • Completed within the time limit for completing the masters degree • Course(s) cannot be used toward any other degree at UCONN or elsewhere • An approved plan of study on file at The Graduate School
Up to 25% of advanced coursework taken at other accredited institutions may be transferred providing the conditions are met: • An approved plan of study is on file with The Graduate School • The Transfer Credit Request Form is approved and signed by the major advisor • The course(s) are graduate level course(s) • Course work completed within the time limit for completing a master’s degree • Grades are a B (not B-) or better • Official transcript form the accredited institution • Course(s) have not been applied toward any degree already completed or to be completed in the future
Final Examination • Students must pass a final examination under the jurisdiction of the Advisory Committee • The Report on the Final Examination for the Master’s Degree form must be submitted to The Graduate School

Advisory Committee • Establish advisory committee with consultation of Major Advisor within the first year. • These individuals are throughout the doctoral term. • Requires a minimum of 3 (three): • Major Advisor and at least one Associate Advisor must hold a Graduate Faculty Appointment in the student’s field of study and area of concentration • One Associate Advisor internal or external to UConn with suitable credentials • CV required for non-faculty and external advisors • Department may require additional advisory committee members
Time To Degree All doctoral degree programs have a TIME LIMIT • Time to degree with a Bachelor’s is 8 years • Time to degree with a Master’s is 7 years • Note Service Indicator on account • Term Limit Noted on Approved Plan of Study • Term Extension Request
Doctoral Degree Audit VALIDATION OF DEGREE Thorough Review of Required Documents: • Plan of Study • General Examination • Dissertation Proposal • Report on the Final Examination for the Doctoral Degree • Dissertation: electronic submission to Digital Commons and hard copy submission to Library properly formatted • Dissertation Submission Checklist Completion date vs Conferral date OVERALL GPA 3.0 or BETTER FOR COURSES listed on PLAN OF STUDY

Graduate Assistants How do I determine my GA’s stipend level?
Stipend Levels •Level B/I: for graduate assistants with at least the baccalaureate. •Level M/II: for experienced graduate assistants in a doctoral program with at least the master’s degree or its equivalent in the field of graduate study. Equivalency consists of twenty-four graduate level content course credits of appropriate course work beyond the baccalaureate completed at the University of Connecticut, together with admission to a doctoral program. •Level P/III: for students with experience as graduate assistants who have at least the master’s degree or its equivalent and who have passed the doctoral general examination.

International TA’s Payroll Waivers • If you plan on assigning an international student with a speaking score of less than a 27 the payroll authorization will require an override from The Graduate School. • The student may be required to complete additional testing through UCAELI. • Keep in mind that if the student does not pass the speech test they must be assigned to a no direct instructional contact position. To request the waiver: Email Laura Stone Must include: • Students name & SA id# or Genesys Employee # • The statement that if the student does not pass the speech test they will have no direct instructional contact with students. • Other duties would need to be assigned at that point (ex. Lab setup, course grader, office hours etc.)
