  2. Welcome to Room 206 • Tonight’s Holiday Open House displays a collection of projects from our fifth grade time period. • The fifth grade time period is from 1850-1920. Mrs. Sweebe

  3. Author: Charles Dickens Charles Dickens was a 19th century writer from England. During the holidays he is known for his famous story A Christmas Carol He also wrote Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and many other novels that dealt with social issues such as the poor and child labor during this time period. Composer: P.I.Tchaikovsky Peter Tchaikovsky was a 19th century composer from Russia. During the holidays he is known for the ballot The Nutcracker. He also composed other ballots such as, Swan Lake. A lot of his symphonies often depict the difficult times Russia was going through during this time period. Time Period Studies Mrs. Sweebe

Miniature Dickensville • Students studied the architectural history of houses from books, web sites and a tour of a Department 56 Dickens village. • Students read and diagramed the cause and effects of Europe’s Industrial Revolution and the urban slums of England. • Students were assigned to make a miniature scale Victorian house out of a 64 oz. orange juice carton. Mrs. Sweebe

Dickensville Unit Data • 25-students were pre and post tested on information about Victorian architecture and urban design. • 25-students had to list what natural materials were use on houses, list characteristics of Victorian doors and windows, and describe how cities were designed during Dickens time period. Mrs. Sweebe

  9. Nutcracker Unit • Students listened and studied Tychoviasky’s ballot The Nutcracker • Students made paper nutcrackers, nutcracker ornaments, & golden walnut ornaments. • Students illustrated and read different versions of The Nutcracker Mrs. Sweebe

  10. Nutcracker Unit Data • 25-students were surveyed before and after the unit. They were asked what was their favorite form of the story, The Nutcracker? • Before the unit most students were only familiar with the ballot or picture book story. • After the unit the novel replaced the ballot as their favorite form of the story. Mrs. Sweebe

  11. Beyond the Units I encourage students to take away with them the appreciation of architecture, music, and literature from this time period. It is important for the fifth graders to make historical connections between some of the holiday traditions we commemorate today with their origin and purposes from the past. Mrs. Sweebe
