NWP Test Suite • Forecast mode vs Hindcast mode • MEC+FF vs VERSUS The discussion started via email some time ago, then during the STC meeting on Monday and it continued during the joint WG6/WG5 meeting. A conclusion is not yet reached, there will be a follow-up during SMC meeting on Friday morning. 13/09/2017 – 19th COSMO General Meeting, Jerusalem

PT Evaluation of the Dycore Parallel Phase (EDP2) • Task duration : 01/2017 – 08/2017 • Two implementations of the RK dynamical core coexist in COSMO: • Fortran • C++ based on STELLA Library (required to run on GPU) • C++ version will soon be in the official version (with 5.05) • STELLA dycore is required to run the model on GPU, faster on CPU also • Maintenance effort 0.5 FTE/year 13/09/2017 – 19th COSMO General Meeting, Jerusalem
Developer experience (using STELLA) • C++ Dycore Source Code Maintainer (P. Spörri, MCH) : nice and efficient to write single source performance portable HPC code • C++ Dycore Users: Experiences at DWD: very different than higher programming language (like Fortran, C++, Python, ...), need permanent support for development. => Seen as a large obstacle for model development • Experience at IMGW (port of EULAG with GridTools): while this is early stage, progress is good and currently there are no major obstacles to port the Fortran code to C++. => Divergent opinions ! 13/09/2017 – 19th COSMO General Meeting, Jerusalem
Developer experience (using STELLA) • Recommendation • Extend the parallel phase of maintaining both the C++ and Fortran implementations • Evaluate again after a period of at least two years • C++ Dycore Source Code Maintainer (P.

PP CEL-ACCEL There is a new WG6 PP about COSMO-EULAG on accelerators (PP CEL-ACCEL) by Z. Piotrowski. The aim is to implement consistent anelastic/compressible COSMO-EULAG dynamical core (DC) within the C++ dynamical core framework of COSMO (the main deliverable being the high-resolution forecasting system ready for pre-operational testing on modern supercomputing architectures, viz., GPU and manycore CPUs). The duration is 2.5y (03.17-09.19) and the participants are IMGW and MCH. 13/09/2017 – 19th COSMO General Meeting, Jerusalem

Main webupdates after the meeting in March • Added filters to publication list (by year and by WG topic) • Newly organised Software page • New FTE summary tables for PPs and PTs • In the main home menu (left side), under “Documentation/Release Notes” now the files misc.global are available (better visibility) • PP pages and Events page updated • PT pages added in the main home menu (left side) • SMC repository added to the “User Support/Repository” page • Info about licensees in “Operational” pages 13/09/2017 – 19th COSMO General Meeting, Jerusalem
Still to be done… There is an idea to include COSMO-LEPS maps Documentation of TERRA to be included (public wiki) but DWD internal discussion is still needed Need to update some “Operational” pages Comprehensive grib2 page Updating FAQ page 13/09/2017 – 19th COSMO General Meeting, Jerusalem
