Last officially released version: 4.13 from May 2010 Developments in 2010 / 2011: COSMO-Model COSMO General Meeting 2011
4.15 (development; 19.11.10) Correction of dry bias of Vaisalla RS92 radiosonde measurements Restructured control of implicit vertical advection option to call a 3rd order implicit vertical advection 4.16 (development; 06.12.10) Adaptations / bug fix in the FLake Model for using the Runge-Kutta scheme 4.17 (development; 24.02.11) Changes for running idealized test cases Proper implementation of periodic boundary conditions 4.18 (tested; 24.05.11) COSMO-ART interfaces for Runge-Kutta dynamical core Changes in the control of horizontal advection; added full Strang-splitting Interfaces for RTTOV9 Conditional Compilation for Nudging, NetCDF, RTTOV Some Topics of the Changes COSMO General Meeting 2011
4.19 (development; 01.08.11) Change in horizontal advection to properly handle flow situations with confluent horizontal flows in neighbouring grid boxes. This avoids spurious and potentially detrimental heat sources, which lead to extreme Theta-values, grid point storms and other unwanted effects. Conditional compilation for (DWD) Grib1 library 4.20 (will be distributed for testing; 31.08.11) (First) technical changes regarding unified COSMO-ICON physics Changed number of small time steps in the last Runge-Kutta step to get a more stable integration. Radiation: Bug fix in sub grid scale cloudiness Microphysics: Correction of size distribution for rain droplets and bug fix in density correction of fall speeds (hydci_pp) Soil Model: Removed the dependency on diagnostic quantity t_2m by replacing it with the lowest atmospheric temperature level (as is done in GME) Interfaces for coupling with OASIS (with conditional compilation) Some Topics of the Changes (II) COSMO General Meeting 2011
Developments in 2010 / 2011: INT2LM COSMO General Meeting 2011
1.14 (development; 19.11.10) Implementation of reading data with grib_api Processing data from JMA and NCEP Enabled reproducibility for initialization of isolated points Bug fix for computation of interpolation weights Introduction of lake water salinity 1.17 (development; 25.01.11) Interpolation of QR, QS from IFS (ECMWF) 1.18 (tested and released; 11.03.11) Bug fixes and technical adaptations Some Topics of the Changes (INT2LM) COSMO General Meeting 2011

ARPA-SIMC reported on the development of Wreport – bufr2netcdf: a library and tools for decoding BUFR reports and creating input files for COSMO model assimilation Wreport : BUFR/CREX encoding-decoding library Bufr2netcdf : BUFR preprocessor for observation COSMO data ingest (Additionally) DB-All.e : import-export data in a physically-based data model, for higher level data processing ARPA-SIMC proposes to include Wreport and bufr2netcdf into the list of COSMO Software under the GNU-GPL licence. This is an official request to STC. DB-ALL.e shall not be COSMO Software, but will also be available for COSMO partners New COSMO Software? COSMO General Meeting 2011
Background work Unified scripts and other framework (up to now there were different „implementations“ for IE and firefox because of incompatibilities between these systems) Updated Pages COSMO-Model (not yet visible) Documentation (Dynamics, User Guides) COSMO Tasks (WG, PP, Operational Pages to some extent) Pages that need update Organization - Events Organization – Reports / Plans Organization – Cooperations Organization – Scientists User Support: Restructuring in view of all the new Users / Licencees (see below) New Pages: SRNWP Observations Page Status of the Web COSMO General Meeting 2011
Model Documentation Dynamics: New version with documentation of Runge-Kutta scheme available (since last week) Physics: started work on updating Assimilation: no updates User Guides for INT2LM and the COSMO-Model have been updated to the latest versions in paper form. The web page tool has not been updated (work on that tool by CLM Community) Plans to start with an „Implementation Documentation“ in the next COSMO year Documentation COSMO General Meeting 2011

In the next years the HRM users will migrate to the COSMO-Model, because support for HRM will stop at the end of 2012. Proposed new Subtask: User Support COSMO General Meeting 2011
This will increase the need for User Support Proposed new Subtask: User Support COSMO General Meeting 2011
Support of new COSMO users during the implementation phase via e-mail and by remote access to their computer systems (if necessary) Support of new COSMO users in setting up their operational COSMO model suite(s) Training for new scientific users during the annual "COSMO User Training" in February in Langen, Germany Training for new operational COSMO model users during the annual "Capacity Building in Regional Modelling“ in Langen, Germany Creating a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page for COSMO model installation issues (and check how this can be set up) Implementation of standardized error messages in the COSMO model We asked for 1 additional FTE Proposed new Subtask: Possible Activities COSMO General Meeting 2011
First draft from August 2010 was followed by a WG 6 discussion at the GM in Moscow Further drafts in January and April; submission to STC Meeting in April Discussion within STC resulted in some comments (role of SMC, STC) Discussions and meetings with CLM group Discussion within SMC Meetings in January (Zürich) and July (web conf) „Final Draft“ (now called Version 1.0) from August 2011 submitted to STC for acceptance NOTE: The „COSMO Coding Standards“ are mainly written for the COSMO-Model and the INT2LM, but are applicable to other COSMO Software. There are appendices for the other codes like fieldextra. NOTE: The „COSMO Coding Standards“ are also discussed within the CLM Community, but (latest news) not accepted at the moment Problems for CLM: which management body decides on CLM developments? who decides on contents of unified releases? grib_api is the (new) grib library (or application programmers interface) to code / decode Grib (1/2) data It will replace the Grib1 library from DWD in the near future. Usage of grib_api for GRIB2 has to be coordinated within COSMO Usage of shortnames and grib_api tables vs. an extra dictionary MeteoSwiss „proposed to define a standardized fixed part in Section 2 of GRIB output to code information like model name and experiment tag“ (Coding of local usage should be documented on COSMO Web Page; responsibility of each center) Use of „local section“ (Section 2 in Grib2): this can be defined by the center; can we have a COSMO common section? Use of entries for local tables (e.g. generating process identifier, background generating process identifiers) GRIB 2 and grib_api COSMO General Meeting 2011
Some Comments: local section structure is dictated by the center, not by the model! General side constraints for DWD: Within DWD usage of GRIB2 is coordinated by TI (12/14; not FE1) for the whole of DWD for O(100) applications and even more users! this allows only a limited range for COSMO wide coordination! Another proposal: for COSMO wide interoperability only use standard information, no local usage at all (like local section, common information in local tables) How can we come to a common / acceptable solution? A meeting will be organized at DWD on Sept. 28./29. Local Usage in GRIB2 Standard for COSMO-Model COSMO General Meeting 2011
