The Genres of Nonfiction

1. The Genres of Nonfiction Genre: A category based on similarities of style and content.

2. Skill: Note-Taking Do not write everything that is on the PowerPoint. Before you put pencil to paper, ask yourself, “Is this really important? Will it be on a quiz or exam?” When you choose to jot something down, shorten and abbreviate (as in abbrev.) it. Make sure your notes are organized so that when you refer to them, they will be easy to read.

6. Academic The purpose of academic nonfiction is to educate and to prove. Contains facts and information Written by scholars (lifetime students) Examples include the textbook, World History, and the essay, “How to Read Like an English Language Arts Teacher.”

7. Autobiography & Memoir The purpose of autobiography and memoir nonfiction is to share personal experiences. Recounts (shares) one’s life, or part of one’s life Written by the person who experienced those events Examples include Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope and The Diary of Anne Frank.

8. App Showdown:Teacher v. Class One town. Lots of words. Room for only 1 victor.

9. Journalistic The purpose of journalistic nonfiction is to inform about world events. Generally consists of shorter written pieces Covers recent events locally, nationally and/or internationally Examples include newspapers like La Verdadand the New York Times.

10. Reference The purpose of reference nonfiction is to provide information. As the name suggests, it is used as a reference, as a resource. Contains only facts and information Typically not read in full Examples include the Oxford English Dictionary and Miss Lohman’s Syllabus for English Language Arts.
