What is coordinateGeometry • The branch of geometry in which a coordinate graphing system makes visible, using points, lines, and curves, the numerical relationships of algebraic equations
History • The name Cartesian is a referring to the mathematician and philosopher René Descartes (whose name is Cartesius).
The main points of this system were developed in 1637 in Descartes’ writings. Also Fermat worked in three dimensions, but he didn’t publish his works. Both of them used an axis in their works and they have a variable length which is measured according to this axis. The system of using a pair of axes was developed in later works.
All the other systems developed after Descartes, for example the spherical and cylindrical coordinates for three-dimensional space, and the polar coordinates for the plane developed after him.
