Father Charles was clerk and minor politician who dreamed of being an actor. Thurber’s protagonists were often based on dad. • Mom was joker and “born comedienne” • Both influenced Thurber’s work and humorist title
Two brothers: William & Robert • William shot James in the eye with arrow during a game and Thurber lost his eye bc of lack of medical tech. Later he would become almost completely blind.
Attended Ohio State University but never graduated bc of poor eyesight • Worked for the Columbus Dispatch, ChicagoTribune, and finally The New Yorker with E.B White • Was writer and cartoonist
