The Study of Death (Thanatology)
What is Death? Death is separation • physical death – separation of soul/spirit from the body Ecclesiastes 12:7 And the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. • spiritual death – separation of man from God Genesis 2:16,17 You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.
What is Death? • eternal death – eternal separation of man from God 2 Thessalonians 1:8,9 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power.
Man is Eternal • We must remember that man - in terms of his inner or non-corporeal nature - is eternal. He is an eternal spirit being created in the image of God, who will live on after physical death forever. This is true of both the believer and non-believer, all will live someplace forever. • The rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) • Truths from the story • Man’s existence does not end with physical death • There are two permanent eternal destinations of man • One’s eternal state is determined by one’s relationship to God in this present life • All spiritual preparations for our eternal home must be made prior to physical death Hebrews 9:27 Just as man is destined to die once (physical death), and after that to face judgment.
The Two Resurrections • The bible clearly promises physical resurrection John 5:28,29 Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. (KJV) • The resurrection to life occurs at the second coming of Jesus 1 Thessalonians 4:16,17 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
The Two Resurrections • The resurrection to judgment after the millennial reign of Jesus Revelation 20:4b,5,6 They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.
Jesus is the Resurrection John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?
