  1. SSR TIME MY PEEPS College Prep 4-22-13

  2. Research and stuff • Now its time to focus on how to start writing a research paper and research skills. • This is incredibly important because: • Being informed on a topic makes your argument more powerful • These skills will profoundly impact your success in college

  3. Junk food in schools • We are going to read an article on junk food in schools • We will then do some research and generate an argument • BUT FIRST…we need to do something, what might that be? • What is the first thing that must be done BEFORE any argument begins? • OR rather, what is the first thing that everyone has to know before we begin?

  4. Hope someone said define • To have an argument, we must agree on what exactly we are arguing about. • SO….lets do that

  5. Group and comp it up • Get into groups of no more than 4 • Rock a frayer model to help us all define “Junk Food.” • REMEMBER!!!!: Start with the examples • Share out • And Ill write

  6. What IS junk food? • Examples: Chips, twinkies, fast food, processed foods, soda, pizza, deep fried chicken. • Criteria: Low nutritional value, high calorie, high sodium, sugar or fat • Non-examples: Fruits, vegetables, organic, Grade A, nuts • Definition: High calorie without any nutritional benefits. Heavily processed.

  7. Read “Aptos Middle School” • Read the article ya’ll

  8. Lets go one step further • (candy for whoever can tell me the difference between “further” and “farther”) • Using your computers, find some scholarly articles that would help us argue our topic (BOTH SIDES!!!) • You probably ought to read the article…just saying • Share out those articles…we will read them. IF they are truly scholarly.

  9. Yes/No Chart • We’ve done this before… • USE THOSE SOURCES WE CAME UP WITH!!!! • On a the back of the article…4 for each side.

  10. Prep for tomorrow… • We will be having debates tomorrow, so you need to prepare. • The trick is, you won’t which side you will be arguing. • Remember: Whichever side you are on tomorrow, you can/should use the arguments you create on the other side as your counter arguments.
