Overview • Guatemala is an predominately agricultural nation but still faces food shortages • 56% of its citizens live below the poverty line • Chronic malnutrition affects 50% of children under 5 years (highest rate in Latin America) • Extreme need for sustainable agriculture
Purpose & Goals • Increase the awareness of Texas A&M students (as well as the wider B/CS community) about the malnutrition crisis effecting Guatemala • Raise funds to donate to the orphanages which teach children about sustainable agriculture • Assist the orphanages/children in their goal of reducing the poverty level by teaching long-term agricultural techniques during our stay in Guatemala
Implementation • Raised almost $2,000 in donations • Volunteering at Agua Viva orphanage from May 16 – May 20
Success? Sí! • Goal 1: Increase the awareness of Texas A&M students (as well as the wider B/CS community) about the malnutrition crisis effecting Guatemala • Goal 2: Raise funds to donate to the orphanages which teach children about sustainable agriculture • Goal 3: Assist the orphanages/children in their goal of reducing the poverty level by teaching long-term agricultural techniques during our stay in Guatemala
Conclusion • Toughest Part was not becoming complacent about fundraising goals • Satisfied AFIL requirements • 1) International requirement • 2) Impact local A&M community • 3) Sustainable
