Using SQ3R • Introduce the entire strategy- one step at a time- and explain what each step means • Show the students how to use the strategy • Provide time for guided practice before expecting students to use it on their own
Survey • Read the opening paragraph, headings, subheadings, and chapter summary • Answer question “What is the chapter about?” • Focus on the main points • Chapter headings = general idea • Subtitles = subpoints
Question • Convert chapter headings into questions • Arouse curious about purpose of reading • Helps students focus on material • Helps students be active readers
Read • Read text to find answers to questions • Think about questions • Re-read if necessary to answer questions
Recite • Recite the answers in their mind • Decide what information is important to remember • Prioritize information in the text • Helps store information into long-term memory
Review • Review what they have learned • Review headings and questions asked • Look for connections between what was read and what they already know • Recall main points of passage
Integrating SQ3R into Your Class • Be sure to model the strategy for your students • Use this strategy on text that you are already using for your class • The goal is to get students so familiar with the strategy that they use in on their own
