SR/SG description on non-radiological hazards (1) SSR-5ENVIRONMENTAL AND NON-RADIOLOGICAL CONCERNS 2.20. The assessment of conventional environmental impacts such as may occur in the construction and operational periods of a disposal facility, for example, impacts relating to traffic, noise, visual amenity, disturbance of natural habitats, restrictions on land use and social and economic factors, is outside the scope of this Safety Requirements publication. This Safety Requirements publication covers the protection of the environment against radiological hazards associated with the radioactive material in the disposal facility. The non-radiological toxic hazard also has to be assessed where this is significant, as discussed in the following paragraphs.
SR/SG description on non-radiological hazards (2) SSG-23: NON-RADIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT 4.57.Radioactive waste may contain potentially hazardous non-radioactive components. … The site selection and design development for the disposal system should provide adequate protection of people and the environment against such non-radiological hazards. 4.58. The assessment of non-radiological impacts arising from the disposal facility will be required and governed by environmental protection legislation. This lies outside the scope of this Safety Guide. Nevertheless, the approaches to assessment described in this Safety Guide may also be of use in the assessment of hazards posed by non-radioactive waste and in optimization of protection and safety against all potential hazards.
Safety Standards • IAEA Safety standards are • Binding for IAEA’s own activities • Not binding on the Member States (but may be adopted by them) EXCEPT in relation to operations assisted by the IAEA: • Integrated Regulatory Review Service • Technical Cooperation Fund work • States wishing to enter into project agreements with the IAEA overview of safety standards
Other publications … Related series Publications in the series listed below do not establish international consensus-based requirements or present recommendations, and therefore they do not contain prescriptive ‘shall’ statements and generally do not contain prescriptive ‘should’ statements. Safety Reports Series Publications in the Safety Reports Series report on practical examples and detailed methods for the application or use of SSs. IAEA Technical documents (TECDOCS) The IAEA-TECDOC Series includes both documentation of the proceedings of small meetings and monograph type documents. Publications are issued in the TECDOC series if it is expected that the lifetime of the publication may be short, or if the subject matter is of a tentative nature or of relatively low significance to Member States. http://www-ns.iaea.org/publications/information.asp?s=5&l=36 overview of safety standards
