Issues Affecting Internship Community • Variety of Application Processes • Over 15 Official Programs • Multiple Student Application Models • Student Selection and NASA Communication • Space Grants, Project Managers, NASA Centers, Students with “Objective Functions” • Diverging Schedules and Planning Processes • Budgets, Logistics, and Economics
Updates Since October 2008 • Lots of Discussions with Lots of Folks • Refinement of SGIWG Project Scope • Several issues taken off the table • Use of proper language to clarify perception • NASA Initiatives • HQ Working Group • SG Alignment
SGIWG Scope, March 6 2009 • Identifying Space Grant needs for providing effective internship matching information to students; • Providing information guidance to students to improve their internship applications; • Describing elements of logistic support that can help improve Space Grant efficiency in placing interns and maximizing their productivity; • Providing feedback as requested by NASA regarding operational and institutional sustainability of a mature, multi-program internship matching program.
Examples of Findings—so far • Students Need Help in Identifying and Communicating Interests to Appropriate Centers • Known Deadlines and Selection Windows Help Budgeting and Planning • Space Grants to Support Undergrad and Grad Interns—Different Requirements • Med School Match Day Requires Coordination • Space Grants contribute, not control, criteria
