Defensive Driving • SIPDE • Scan – constantly search for potential hazards • Identify – the specific hazard • Predict – ask ‘what if’ • Decide – a course of action • Execute – the action • SMITH SYSTEM • Aim high in steering – looking further ahead than other drivers • Get the big picture – seeing more around you than other drivers • Keep your eyes moving – being more aware than other drivers • Leave yourself an out – positioning in traffic better than other drivers • Make sure they see you – making yourself more visible than other drivers

  9. Scan – Lo0king left – right – left 45 degree angle - intersections Don’t assume signals/other drivers body language

  10. Stay Back • Four second following distance • Tailgater – increase your following distance

  11. Blind spots / visibility & large vehicles • Cover your brakes / brake early

  12. Stale green lights • Keep wheels straight until ready to turn • Hand placement

  16. Keep the bus within the proper speed limit. (GA Law 40-6-160) a. The speed limit on school grounds is 10 mph. b. The speed limit on a bus route is the posted speed limit, but not to exceed the maximum of 40 mph for a school bus transporting school children to and from school. c. The speed limit is 55 mph for a school bus transporting from school activities on a public road or on the Interstate system. d. The speed limit on extra-curricular trips is the posted speed for the road being traveled – or a maximum of 55 mph. f. Forsyth County School buses should never exceed 55 mph loaded or unloaded.
